Hey All I found out this morning that my brother passed away working in Alaska. His family all live in Michigan. My dad and I have no money and I am asking as a friend if any of you can help us to make the funeral. We are not sure the exact date, it will likely be next week. I know this is not much the right place for this but we are desperate to find a way there. I have priced greyhound to be $353.65 round trip for me (adult) and our father (senior)

I set-up a chip-in: http://damontalbot.chipin.com/

So sorry to hear about that, D.

When you get a chip-in set up (i don't know how to do it) PM me and I will send you $20.

I would help you out. My deepest condolences to your family.

You need to sign up for PayPal (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_registration-run) - it's free. However, this might take 3-4 days for your bank account information to propagate through their system. Do you have a family friend that has a paypal that you can trust will give you the money? Does your father have a paypal account? If so, you can use their email to make a chipin (http://www.chipin.com/) (it's required you have a paypal account to make a chipin), or you can make your own paypal account.

Setting up a Chipin is relatively straightforward.

First, you need to set up a paypal account. This will take about 15 minutes.

Here: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_registration-run

Once you've set that up, you provide Chipin with the info for your paypal account, and money chipped in will go there.

Chipin is here:
http://www.chipin.com/

Chipin will then provide you with a link to a page where people can donate.

My condolences.

My friend just got a round-trip plane ticket from California to Denver for $200... it's probably cheaper to fly.

Edit: NM, that was the pricing for two people.. I guess $150 isn't that bad.

I found some for $187, not sure if that will help you ultimately save on meals and hotels for the bus drive or whatever..

However, I hope that those who can contribute do so.

Thank you all for the support. this is completely unexpected. My Dad and I actually were at the hospital for my Dad having a check-up on one of his many ailments when we received the call from my brothers wife.

I found out how to setup paypal, link it to my dad's bank, and created a chip-in. I set the goal at $400 as that will get us there and back. If there is extra it will go to a very nice flower arrangement for the funeral. Again I thank all of you as friends nationwide.

(P.S. if any of you are in Muskeagon Michigan area maybe we can meet and take my mind off things for a hour)

So sorry for your loss UA. I know that must be horribly rough news to hear so unexpectedly. Prayers and thoughts for your family.

I've got paypal and chipin accounts that could be used if necessary.

Does anyone know if/how someone can purchase airline/bus/train tickets for someone else?

We/someone could do the chipin now, and purchase tickets with a credit card now, and that would speed things up a bit (not having to wait for the transfer of funds and bank account approval).

I'd definitely check airline and train ticket prices too - a place to start == http://www.Cheaptickets.com

I see you have paypal/chipin now- but still, it takes a some time to approve a bank account and transfer the funds.
I don't know, it might be better to go with accounts that are already established in order to save time.

I'm not sure if they still have the same policy, but airlines used to have a drastically reduced rate for families of the deceased to attend a funeral. Buses might do the same thing. It might be worth checking.

Sorry sorry about your brother. :(

Sorry for your loss.

Just so you know, it may take up to 5 days to get it set up so you can get money out of paypal through your bank. However, it should make it easier to get somebody to front the money for you if you need it sooner than that, when you can prove you have funds in paypal.

I am so grateful to those that have been able to donate so far. I noticed that some even from Texas, including areas expecting Ike shortly have given. That is just more then my eyes could take dry.

My brother was the biggest teddy bear of a man. If you ever watched American Chopper my brother was just like Paul Sr. He could scare the death out of any man at the bar, but in reality would hardly hurt anything. He just was remarried in 2006 and now has 6 children total. they are all wonderful kids. He worked hard in Alaska at a goldmine, though every dime went to taking care of his family and giving them a good life.

My Dad is truly amazed that this Revolution is now coming together to help us in our time of need. I tried explaining to him in the past how free markets and community efforts work better the socialist government bureaucracies. I think the way you all are helping us is proving to him that good people, can do good things. Thank you all again, and bump.

This revolution rocks! Good example that you don't need government to help each other out.

I wish you, your dad and the family of your brother all the best to go through this hard time.

It's late to add this, but my condolences. I am glad people pulled together to help you out, and in the fog of grief sometimes it's the anonymous acts of kindness that touch us most deeply. We "know" each other on these boards, but people could just have clicked a tab and gone back to arguing over something instead of helping. It's easier to turn away on here than anywhere else. People didn't. They helped you out in a basic, human time of need.

Never let it be said there is no kindness!
