View Full Version : Report from the Bob Barr Press Conference

Don
09-10-2008, 11:11 AM
I just sat in stunned silence as Bob Barr blatantly lied to the national press corp (or the half dozen members that bothered to show up). He stated that he had not committed to attend this press conference. This is patently false. He was fully committed to attend until 30 minutes before when Russ Varney called Jesse Benton and said that Barr was out. This man has not one ounce of integrity in his body.

Adam Kokesh stood up during the press conference, denounced Barr and withdrew his support. Several others in the room quickly followed. Great job Adam!

I asked Barr Communications Director Shane Corey after the event why they pulled this stunt and was told to go f*** myself.

Did you actually think Bob Barr was a true Libertarian and not a neocon in sheep's clothing, so to speak? Dr. Paul will not say anything against Barr, no matter what as that is not his way, but I doubt he will openly back him or offer to allow him to participate in the true struggle against tyrany again. Don't bite the hand that feeds you...and many of you did support Bob Barr with donations and constant posts. Ron Paul's coattails are too good for Bob Barr.

i never trusted Barr. i didn't care much what he had to say on the campaign trail. what i cared about was what he has done. most politicians talk a good talk when they're campaigning. McCain has been trying to talk like a conservative lately. so conservatives are being duped - "maybe he's changed his mind!"

after voting for Bush based on what he was saying, i realized that character cannot be assessed based on words, only actions. i trusted Dr Paul because he has consistent action to back up his words. Bob Barr has actions that contradict his words. he may have truly changed, but i wanted to see it in practice before i trusted him, especially as president.

i have reservations about Baldwin for the same reasons. not because he has a bad track record, but because he has no track record at all. we have no idea whether he will stick to principles when he enters the snake pit.

There are lots of socialists out there, and yes... i myself have strong disagreements with them, including nader.

However, he is an asset of ours now.

Dont vote for nader, but for gods sakes dont vote for McCain!!! You have 4 3rd party options to choose from.

If we get the cumulative 3rd party votes anywhere around 20%, that could be enough momentum to really get the revolution flowing!

Just wanted to let you know: The person Bob Barr allegedly beat out to be the LP nominee, Mary Ruwart, is a friend and fan of Ron Paul. I gave a speech at the Libertarian National Convention urging a nomination of Dr. Ruwart so that we could continue the Ron Paul Revolution through her candidacy. Radical Libertarians and conservative constitutionalists (Ron Paul is both) don't see eye to eye on every issue, but I want to make sure it is known that BOB BARR DOES NOT SPEAK FOR REAL LIBERTARIANS, PERIOD. He is a neocon abortionist thug who hijacked our party, and we are outraged at his no-show at this press conference.

Thank you.

I understood we were not going to win jackshit in 2008. I understood that back in May of 2007 when I signed up for this forum. I understood it when I drove all around the country handing out info. What I didn't understand is that the actually leaders of the movement would actively engage in the flame wars and try to divide the camps.

This dispute is not about issues of substance, it is an ego war about who showed up at a national presser. It is no different then arguing about lipstick on a pig hoping that no issues of substance are addressed.

I don't agree with Barr in skipping it, I don't even like Barr as a person. If I ever thought he could win, I would absolutely be opposed to anybody voting for him. I always thought this was about the future, and gaining ballot access for the next go round.

Apparently I was wrong. What a waste of time!

Maybe there is a seed of hope in each of us that we could defeat the two party machine and if it means I know something that calls into serious question one of the people who could have the Whitehouse then I am duty bound to make it known.(Devils advocate here) Liberatarians have an idealistic streak in them so they believe anything is possible.:D

Barr has been a plant to cause chaos, imho. I used to live in Georgia until just recently. I was flabberghasted that they would pick HIM of all people with a track record so antithetical to what liberatarians believe. This whole years worth of campaigning has been a series of showing just how much the public will take if you put media spin on it. From Obama "the messiah", then Huckabee "out of nowhere popularity" to the McCain "he wasn't my choice but let's get behind him" nomination, throw in Bob Barr the "neo-con liberatarian". Ron Paul the real deal money making machine draws no votes?? Aaack! I am still trying to undderstand how Palin is getting Christian conservative votes and its all about the spin.

People are going to vote for who the choose. If you can still vote for Barr after this stunt then you have a higher threshold for pain than those of us who see once a neo-con always a neo-con...

This thread indicates that Barr signed the agreement and had good things to say about RP, even if he didn't show:

So, it doesn't look quite as though he threw RP under the bus as we feared, but solidarity would have been better.

Didn't care so much about the electoral math as about the ability to vote for Dr. Paul in the general. But hey, it would be an interesting idea. With the electorial math so close, taking Montana out of McCain's category and giving it to Paul would likely cause McCain to lose it all. It's got a really low population, maybe it should be considered. If nothing else it would force the Repubs to give us some degree of respect lest we do the same in 2012.

As disappointing and surprising this is to some people, the good news is that patriots like Adam Kokesh earn more respect, notoriety and credibility.
Adam's site- http://kokesh.blogspot.com/ (http://http://kokesh.blogspot.com/)
I am not surprised in the least by Bob Barr's abhorrent actions, but I feel bad for those who once had faith that he had "changed". He is no friend to real Libertarians or Ron Paul. It is clear by watching the PC that Ron Paul thought Bob was going to show up at any moment. What a liar that man is. Too bad RP took the man's word that he would be there.

Shane Corey- What a great communicator. Good goin' Bob! You picked another wiener.
The Libertarians should abandon Bob Barr, not their ideals by standing behind a lying, sneaky Neocon with an L by his name. He is out to take the Libertarian party down, and divide this movement.

If I didn't have Baldwin as choice, I would vote for Cynthia McKinney or Nader before voting for a lying scumbag that has a coms director that tells patriots like Don Rasmussen to go * himself.

i never trusted Barr. i didn't care much what he had to say on the campaign trail. what i cared about was what he has done. most politicians talk a good talk when they're campaigning.

Ron wont trade is congressional seat just to lose the presidential race. Barr is up to shenanagins.

His Congressional seat is locked up. He has no opposition, and if the GOP would throw him out if he endorsed the Libertarian Party candidate, then I'm sure the argument could also be made by them to do so for effectively endorsing multiple 3rd Party Candidates.

What Dr. Paul could be worried about losing are his Committee assignments, including his Ranking Member position on the Financial Services Committee. But I would argue it's more important to back the Party who truly represent his views (the Libertarian Party, of which he is a dues paying member) rather than be able to hound Ben Bernanke every month.

I warned, and warned, and warned, and warned what a piece of shit Bob Barr was from the start, and finally he shows his true colours.

Adam Kokesh, Iraq War Veteran and Barr backer made this statement from the audience during the Barr press conference, “Leadership is not just about knowing when to lead, but knowing when to follow,” Kokesh said. “You failed that test today and I retract my endorsement of you.”

I agree 1000% with Adam's statement, he has been in the thick of this battle latlely more than anybody posting here I would guess, he is making the right call, everybody should follow his lead.

I was very impressed with his speech at the Rally.

Barr says the press conference that would have got him way more votes "wasn't worth it", the man is clueless, and it's a huge insult to Ron Paul who was trying to help him.

What really makes me sad is that I suspect that Ron Paul was disappointed by Barr. People can disagree with Paul, and that's ok, but disappointing Paul? That's just wrong.

I felt that too. There was a part in the live video where RP was checking the time and said something like "We can see if Bob will be here in a few minutes or so"

I suspect one reason they ran over time was purposely so Barr would have more time to get there..

I felt bad also that Ron Paul may have been personally let down by Bob Barr.

All of us on these forums would do anything in our power not to disappoint the man... so now, I have to say that this will probably mean me not voting for barr either..

Originally, I would have.. even earlier today I kinda blew it off.. But now, Itll be either Baldwin or Nader.

I am greatly puzzled by the notions on this forum that politics is a realization not just of philosophy (à la Ayn Rand), but every personal desideratum. Here, everything from damnation for "evil" facial hair to melodramatic walkouts is supposed to be tolerated!

A key reason for keeping government small is that every one of the few goods it delivers is "one size fits all" -- you don't get your way. Bob Barr is one who has recanted from Conservatism to embrace Libertarianism. If you're going to do politics, you have to accept this blessing and show an agreeable leniency for the details. Hairsplitting doesn't make you look smarter -- it makes you look sophomoric.

So, at least let's hear Barr's account of the events before tarring and feathering him. His official reply says:
"First, the Barr campaign met with Ron Paul's staffers yesterday afternoon to deliver the offer of the LP's VP slot to Ron Paul and to discuss the details of the event that Bob Barr was invited to attend. More details were to be submitted to the Barr campaign but did not arrive until nearly 3 a.m. the morning of the event. At 9 a.m. Barr's campaign manager, Russell Verney, informed the Paul campaign that Bob would not be attending however he would still give his backing of the four principles highlighted by Dr. Paul."

Also, when I subscribed to this site I agreed that I would use no profanity -- and yet a "senior member" feels free to call Bob Barr "a piece of s**t". Just because the offended party can't reach into your monitor and jerk you up by the collar doesn't mean you should cease to be a gentleman.

You're certainly right that RP has more character and integrity than Barr.
But personal, even character, considerations are near the bottom of the list in determining who I support. Once you sort out the "evidence", then you have to deal with the passions of the (usually well-intentioned) actors at the moment, then you have to consider each player's notion of what he thought was the context of his actions, then you have to consider "well, was he cross because his hemorrhoids were acting up?" (This nation fought two Barbary Wars just because some diplomat was swatted on the head by a perspiring, uncomfortable sultan.) -- Either I'm just too lazy to play god, or I'm nauseated by the thought that most actors are driven by their glands, or this minutia just bores the crap out of me. The shortcut from this miasma is just to ask: What choice offers the most effective prospects for my ideas? Even RP supports Barr; even DNolan supports Barr (http://www.nolanchart.com/article4805.html) simply because they recognize that only ideas should drive these choices.

ITS ABOUT BREAKING THE BACK OF THE TWO-PARTY SYSTEM AND ALL THE OTHER STUFF RP SAYS. SET ASIDE THE PETTY DIIFERENCES FOR NOW AND AT LEAST AGREE TO VOTE FOR A THIRD PARTY. OTHERWISE WERE ALL STUCK WITH THE SAME BS WE'VE BEEN DEALT WITH FOR DECADES. WE MUST THEN CHANGE THE CPD SO OTHERS CAN DEBATE AND BE HEARD. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO WATCHED THIS?

:)

Even Murray Rothbard, one of the founders of the Libertarian Party, the Cato Institute, and greatest Austrian Economists spoke strongly of uniting Libertarians and the Old Right with the New Left of his day, because they agreed on the most urgent issues. Once they establishment is washed away, then we can debate the finer points of honest political ideology, mmkay?

I still, to this day am trying to figure out what the LP was thinking in allowing Barr to become their candidate?
Was it a simple sell out to some third rate name recognition with possible insider pull? It certainly seems that way, and that usually is the beginning of the end of a political party if that is all it was.
I really hope the party can find a decent non-weasel candidate in the next 4 years because there is no other party I really Identify with. : (

I will just go with Baldwin for now, unless a miracle happens and Barr is removed, probably too late for that.
