It didn't really have anything to do with the speech.
But often times, such humor can help a speaker draw intimate connections with its crowd.. as if he was talking just to you.
Of course, he could have just had a lapse, but most likely it was purposeful.

LOL. Yeah, that joke didn't make sense to me either - thought I missed something. The "Poly-Tick" joke was funny though.

You guys didn't get it? the farmer didn't have to get them to get out... they got out on their own once they found out the alligators were in the pond.

I understand that... but i don't understand where that fit in the speech.. as in, he didn't go on to talk about the alligators in the pond's symbolism.
