View Full Version : The last gambit: electoral college delegates pick president

Okay, Ron Paul didn't get the Republican Presidential Nomination. His name isn't going to be on the ballots this fall.

But there is one, final, hail mary tactic we can use to our advantage, something created by the founding fathers for just this very situation:

The Electoral College.

The President of the United States is NOT voted into office by the people. He (and the vice-president) are elected by delegates in the Electoral College. And they can vote for whoever the heck they want!

This is our last chance. If Barr and Baldwin are on board, any delegates they win can vote for Ron Paul instead! With Texas out of play for the main parties, we can get 34 delegates uncontested.

Not only that, we can expand the DVDs4DELEGATES program to convert the electors for McCain AND Obama!

Think about it. Republicans want to hold onto the White House at almost any cost: McCain proves that. But if we can reach those electors, we can make them understand that the founders empowered them to make the best choice for the country, and that they have the last voice in the process. Disgruntled Hillary supporters are probably very well represented in the electoral college. We can get them on board too.

"Winning" on election night does not mean you win the presidential vote. To quote Wikipedia:

"Electors chosen on Election Day meet in their respective state capitals (or in the case of Washington, D.C., within the District) on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December, at which time they cast their electoral votes on separate ballots for President and Vice President."

WE CAN STILL WIN! Even better, we can win using the very mechanisms designed by the founding fathers!

One more thing, we can definitely use the fact that both McCain and Obama were born outside the US (Panama and Kenya, respectively), aren't natural born citizens, and are thus ineligible to become president.

Oh, and here's a valuable website on the electoral college:

All I'm trying to do is use the Constitution to get Ron Paul elected.

Why stop when there is still hope left?

Obama was born in Hawaii.

Other than that, the electors are chosen very carefully and are known loyal supporters of the party. Very few faithless electors slip through. Besides, there'd be a backlash against the electoral college and it would be abolished.

It's time to move on, get involved, stay involved, and be ready for next time.

The one advantage to this plan is that no one will see it coming.

The downside is there is a reason for that.

My head is going to implode!

You all might want to get off of this forum and do some research about everything that's getting ready to come down and PREPARE YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY instead of coming up with one asinine idea after the next.

If none of you like what the author has just posted, move along. If you insist on replying, then at least write something intellectual that will convince the author to your view point or help the author.

I'm sure convincing the electoral college is impossible but at least we are shaking things up. We will be converting few people in the process.

That's the beauty of grassroots. No one is forcing you to participate in any project.

Trivia question: Who was the first woman to get an electoral vote?

Answer: "Tonie" Nathan ( LP ), 1972, I think.

Yep! ;)

(1) 1972 election (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_1972): Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia) Elector Roger MacBride (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_MacBride), pledged for Republicans Richard Nixon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Nixon) and Spiro Agnew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiro_Agnew), cast his electoral votes for Libertarian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Libertarian_Party) candidates John Hospers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hospers) and Theodora Nathan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodora_Nathan). MacBride's vote for Nathan was the first electoral vote cast for a woman in U.S. history. MacBride became the Libertarian candidate for President in the 1976 election (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_1976).

I had no idea there were dozens of electors in the 1830's who refused to support the candidates!

Hope springs eternal.

Here is the best site on the electoral college:
http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/faq.html

There are laws governing how free presidential electors are:
http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/laws.html
(Violating your oath may even be a felony such as in NM.)

There are no "delegates" to the electoral college, please stop saying that (I think you mean "presidential electors" ;)). There has been enough confusion on delegates on this forum--including among some mods--to last us a lifetime.

Please look at how the "presidential elector candidates" are chosen. For example, I was a "presidential elector candidate" for Barr/Root in DC. What that means is that if Barr had carried DC his "presidential electors candidates" would then become the "presidential electors" for DC's three electoral college votes.

Like the delegate process, every state is different.

This effort, while I applaud your determination and eternal optimism, is one I cannot support. In part we should oppose it for a reason you argue: undermining the electoral college which Dr. Paul supports.

Please focus on promoting the remaining presidential candidate of your choice and gaining influence in the party. My free advice.
