Apparently, Google has just announced a new web browser to compete with microsoft. Has anyone on rpforums given it a run? What do you guys think about Google giving Microsoft a run for their money? I personally love to see companies do inventive stuff like this and show the wonders of a free market.

I think it's good to have competition, but Google is creepy and I would never use their browser ever.

Exactly, their main reason to compete is not profit, that have plenty of that.

That link below is not the home page, click the logo all the way at the bottom to see more, including them hiring intelligence people.

I haven't found any problems with it. It seems pretty fast.

I believe I've received a tech newsletter subscription that indicates that Chrome has already been hacked:rolleyes:

Do your own research-

I have learned to never be the first one to try the newest upgrades/patches/whatever, ever since a ZoneAlarm destroyed my Eudora e-mail archives.

Luckily, I had a full backup from only 2-3 days before

My roomate has already found major security flaws in the source code.

Also currently google has ownership over material posted using the browser, i.e. blogs, message board postings, etc.. but they claim to be in the process of changing the terms of service, retro-actively.. I don't know why they didn't do this before releasing, pretty ridiculous.

Google already caches every IP and search request sent to its search engine for two years. (that they admit to). Until recently, they had stored every search engine request they EVER RECEIVED.

The whole point of them releasing a browser is that they want to know EVERYTHING you do, not just what you search for.

Perhaps this is benign market research, but it is highly likely that in a shtf scenario, Google will not be your friend.

I think they will start it out being "fast" and then as updates happen their "Tracking and cookies" will slow it down to normal speed....

firefox started that way as well, then more add ons and "functions" were put in.

When a browser is simply a basic browser it is faster than shit

I swear to God paranoia is worse for people's brains than crack cocaine.

The browser is a BETA product. Perhaps some of you are unfamiliar with the software development process. That's fine, I'll explain. Software progresses through three phases: alpha, beta, and complete. The beta phase means that all the features are in, but they probably don't work right and they may certainly be changed and rearranged. In other words, Chrome isn't finished. Of course it's buggy, and of course it has issues.

As for the EULA, yes they just copy and pasted it from some of their other products. They are going to change it to something more suitable for a browser. They've even apologized. Once again, big whoop, it's beta.

Kalifornia... there is no way Google could monitor everyone's web habits through Chrome. You can't open up a TCP connection without anyone noticing. That would be spotted and publicized within 24 hours. If it could be done, don't you think Microsoft would have been doing it for years?

Chrome is open source, and Google has already given permission to take anything from the browser (or even the entire browser?) and do what they want with it.

So, you could download the source code from the browser, remove any google code, and rename it the Ron Paul browser? Well, I'm not sure if you can go that far, but the point is that it is not required for the browser to connect to google in any way. Not that I'm concerned over it, at this time.

I'd be using it right now if it had an add-on/extension system comparable to Firefox's. I don't know if that is on the way or not, yet.

you to Chrome ("comic") (http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/#).

Quote:

Google has acted with speed and retracted the objectional sentences in Chrome's EULA, so that any content you post via Chrome is yours and yours alone.

The ruckus was caused by our old friends, the paralegal firm Cut 'n' Paste Inc. Their employment has now been terminated and a new contract arranged with Fink First, Cut 'n' Paste who have produced a revised section 11 reading:
