My local meetup in St. Paul is having one next weekend.

I'm looking for ANY info to help out.

What did you use for sign material? Tyvek, or something cheaper?
what did you use for your stencil? Coroplast?

How much paint did you buy? If you used a gun, what type of paint, and did you thin it?

Anything would help....

We have had 3 so far. we were able to get used billboard material from a sign company for $20, each billboard made 75 signs. As to the stencils we used coroplast. It took about 6 cans of black and 3 of red to do 100 signs. Have a great time!

Wow, that's all the paint you needed? Are these for the big Revolution signs??

A handful of us in our subgroup of the Detroit meetup do sign-making several times per week.

Get the yellow pages out and ask a billboard company if you can use their scraps for a project you are working on with some friends.

Find a big 4x8 chloroplast sign on the side of the road from the last election to make the stencil.

One trick we found was to use very large paper clips to attach the stencil and then lay it out with something to prop up each side. This stretches the material and makes it nice and tight. We bought scrap billboard material and used the back white side. This make each large banner pretty inexpensive.

Perhaps this photo can help explain better:

The Philly workshop:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuTksmA2MaI

They have a stencil made out of wood, it is lowered/raised with a counter-balanced bucket on a pulley. Using paint sprayed out of air-compressor guns. Using tyvec. They have it down to about 5-8minutes for an 8x3 sign.

Seen that...man, they got it down to science.

Thanks for the link.

6 sign parties, averaging 12-15 people each time.

I have been using Billboard vinyl instead of Tyvek. Tyvek SUCKS in comparison. Everyone making signs should get in touch with their local billboard company and see if they have any extra material (Lamar, CBS, ClearChannel, etc)

No prob!!! Also another tip is to have sign parties at places where you can entirely unroll those 48' billboards completely unto a flat surface. Today we used a Dr.'s office parking lot. When you are able to unroll the whole thing you can lay the stencils down on the vinyl and square them up and then cut the banners after you paint them, thus increasing productivity by ~200% of or so (for us).

Also paint depends on number of people. If you have more than 10 people then just go with spray paint. It is a bit more expensive though.

-Spray Paint = more involved group, but a bit more expensive

-Spray Gun = less involved group, but a bit less expensive if you have gun/compressor already.

We use a combination with spray gun and spray paint.

1 Gallon = approx. 50-75, 9'x4' banners.

1 Can = 2 banners.

Using a Chalkline has been a real help too. It helps cut the big vinyls.

What kind of paint did you use for the spray guns?
Enamel, latex, etc?

Plain cheap as we could find latex. It sticks well to both vinyl and tyvek.

Also try to make sure you have a "gravity feed" or "top feed" spray gun. Bottom and stick feed guns are much harder to work with. Lowes sells a gravity feed gun that for $40.
