Check it out.

In short,

libertariansm is leftwing

socialism is "middle of the road"

and conservatism is rightwing, statist, opposite of libertarianism

he makes his argument for this in this video. It's very fascinating.

Murray got it wrong, libertarian is NO-wing of the statist bird. Perhaps, that's why he invented the term "anarcho-capitalism".

In a historical context he's probably right. Either way, these labels have been used to mean different things, in different times, and in different places. In my opinion, they have lost all usefulness, and are stupid.

No it is not an oxymoron. The left-right spectrum goes back to the French legislative assembly during the French Revolution. Those who sat on the right were conservatives who wanted to conserve the monarchy, military, empire, aristocracy, mercantilism, and feudalism. Those who sat on the left were opposed to massive state power and big business. They included collectivist anarchists, socialists, individualist anarchists and classical liberals, or libertarians.

I understand the original origins of the STATIST political spectrum. This libertarian just ain't on it. ;)

Great lecture!

I completely agree that socialism is really a mishmash of incompatible political ideals; which is why it's always doomed to failure. Statism (monarchy most common throughout history I guess), while not a good situation for the people, at least works for long periods of time. As did classical liberalism here in the USA for quite some time.

Man I wish I could take one of Professor Long's philosophy classes!
