Marchers spread word on free speech, Constitution

By Pamela Powers Menomonie News Bureau MENOMONIE - Carrying U.S. flags and one of the nation's first flags - a symbol of a rattlesnake with the words "Don't Tread on Me" - marchers hiked from Elk Mound to Menomonie Tuesday to promote the Constitution and the founding principles of American government.
They are part of the Great American Walk for Freedom. About a dozen walkers are traveling 280 miles in 21 days from Green Bay to Minneapolis.
"Essentially, we want the restoration of the Constitution," said Steve Vincent of Los Angeles. "The government of America has departed from its rule of law and the rule book from our Founding Fathers."
The group got together as part of the so-called constitutional movement that supported Texas congressman and self-described libertarian Ron Paul in his unsuccessful attempt this year to win the Republican presidential nomination.
The group picked the route from Green Bay to Minneapolis because there were several cities and towns along the way where they could hold town hall meetings to discuss the Constitution and give out free copies of it and the Declaration of Independence.
Walkers stopped Saturday in Stanley, Sunday in Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire, and Monday in Elk Mound. From Menomonie they travel to Woodville, Roberts and Hudson for town hall meetings through the week.
The volunteers are from across the country. They are traveling about 15 miles a day. With support people, the group totals about 25.
Michael Maresco of Hawaii said the group emphasizes how laws like the Patriot Act - the controversial law signed by President Bush soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks - are taking away rights such as free speech, the freedom to bear arms, the need for government to procure search and arrest warrants, and constitutional protections in criminal cases.
"Those right are gone," he said. "People don't realize that. It's bad. Right now, people fear government. The Constitution is not just a suggestion. It is a legal contract."
Jim Azzola of New Hampshire said throughout the trek he has heard people echo concerns about loss of freedom.
"We are an educational movement," he said.
The group's goal is to start a national dialogue about the American government. Electing representatives who will protect the Constitution is important, Azzola said.
Ben Olson from Wisconsin Dells is walking with the group. He is running for the 3rd Congressional District seat as a Libertarian.
"The Constitution and the Bill of Rights is the blueprint to run our nation," he said.
Rod Owers of Hornbeck, La., joined the walk because he didn't like the direction the country was taking after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act, which in 2006 authorized military commission trials, concern him.
"I am out here to restore freedom given to us at birth," said Owers, a carpenter.
Bret Hatch of Green Bay, a television station camera operator, said he saw constitutional rights being eroded and wanted to take a stand. He said the Campaign for Liberty, Ron Paul's continuing effort to promote individual freedoms, is a "real revolution."
According to www.campaignforliberty.com (http://www.campaignforliberty.com), the mission is to promote and defend the principles of individual liberty, constitutional government, sound money, free markets and noninterventionism by means of educational and political activity.
Grant McCallum of Cleveland, Ohio, said he became involved while working as an electrical engineer in the Silicon Valley and realized trade agreements were being made that shipped engineering design jobs overseas.
