Owens to Participate in AG Debate

COLUMBUS, Ohio — WBNS-10TV, ONN and The Columbus Dispatch will host a debate on Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. in an effort to provide Ohioans with an opportunity to learn more about the candidates for Attorney General.

The debate will be broadcast live from the COSI studio in Columbus. Facing off will be Democrat Richard Cordray, Republican D. Michael (Mike) Crites and Independent candidate Robert M. Owens.

In traditional question/answer format, the debate will be moderated by veteran 10TV Anchor Jerry Revish. The four-member panel will include John Fortney, 10TV anchor and host of ONN’s premier political talk program “Capitol Square;” Columbus Dispatch Reporter James Nash; ONN Statehouse Reporter Dan Weist; and Karen Kasler, of Ohio Public Radio and TV.

The three candidates are vying to fill a two-year vacancy left by the former attorney general, Marc Dann, who resigned during a sexual harassment scandal.

“In this critical election year, we’re pleased to combine resources and give our viewers the chance to gain a more thorough understanding of the candidates and issues before their ballots are cast this November,” said Tom Griesdorn, 10TV and ONN president and general manager. “Ohio’s political and news watchers will find 10TV and ONN to be the local and statewide channels to watch for the outcomes and impact of Election 2008.”

10TV and ONN will provide live Web streaming of the debate in its entirety on 10TV.com (http://www.10tv.com/) and ONNtv.com (http://www.ONNtv.com). In addition, viewers who are Time Warner Cable digital customers will be able to access the debate on an unlimited basis on Time Warner’s Local on Demand (LOD) channels in Mid-Ohio, Northeast and Southwest Ohio.

Exclusive poll: Independent candidate complicates Ohio AG race

http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=96784&catid=3

CLEVELAND -- The race to replace Marc Dann as Ohio Attorney General includes an independent candidate who is attracting some voters.

An exclusive poll conducted by SurveyUSA and WKYC-TV shows independent candidate Robert Owens with 13% of the vote. The poll of 692 likely Ohio voters was conducted from September 12-14.

Leading the race with 44% is Democrat candidate Richard Cordray, currently Ohio's Treasurer. Republican candidate Mike Crites has 33% of the vote. Crites is a former US Attorney who prosecuted Pete Rose.

The SurveyUSA Channel 3 News poll showed another 10% of likely Ohio voters still undecided, making a projected winner impossible at this time.

Both Democrat and Republican party members are solidly behind their parties' candidates, while 35% of voters who call themselves independents will vote for independent candidate Owens.

Dann resigned in May. Nancy H. Rogers was appointed to replace him, but is not a candidate for the remainder of the term. The winner of the November election will serve the remaining two years of the term as Ohio Attorney General.

Complete demographic details of the poll are available by clicking the link provided.

Owens to Crites: “What took so long?”

Robert Owens for Ohio Attorney General (http://www.owens2008.com)
September 18th, 2008

DELAWARE, OHIO - Independent attorney general candidate Robert Owens today responded to an announcement by Mike Crites, which suggested slight changes to the handling of legal contracts in the attorney general’s office. Owens said that the end of his opponent’s silence on the issue was long overdue, but that the Crites pitch was not a significant change and timed for political purposes.

Owens questioned the timing of the proposal, saying “since Mr. Crites himself acknowledges that these no-bid contracts have been a root source of corruption for years, why are we just now hearing from him?”

Robert Owens has made the elimination of no-bid contracts a centerpiece of his campaign to restore integrity in the attorney general’s office. In speeches, candidate questionnaires and interviews, he has consistently emphasized the need for a fundamental change in the system, including the handling of contracts through the AG’s office.

“When I announced my candidacy nearly four months ago, I said that the no-bid contracts must end, to be replaced by an open competitive bid process,” Owens said. “I find it very ironic that the day after a new poll shows our campaign gaining significant traction is when Mr. Crites chose to announce this mimicking proposal. His plan is not an open competitive bid process, as we’ve been calling for.”

In addition to proposing the elimination of no-bid contracts, Owens has stressed the need for increased transparency in all of state government operations. He is the only attorney general candidate to have signed the Buckeye Institute’s “Pledge for Transparency and Openness in Government.”
