Event emphasizes Constitution, freedom
The Great American Walk for Freedom sat down for a while Monday in Wausau as its main activists hosted a town hall meeting at VFW Post 388 on River Drive.

The objective was simple: to educate the public about what the group calls an erosion of constitutional government in today's world. About 30 people were on hand to hear that message Monday evening.

"We feel that America is not living up to the Constitution that our Founding Fathers gave us," said Steven Vincent, one of the Walk's organizers. "We have lost the essence of American freedom in this country."

The Walk is part of a three-week campaign in which participants are marching from Green Bay to Minneapolis to inform the public about what they see as the government's attempts to minimize the safeguards and rights granted by the Constitution.

The effort stemmed from a group of people who latched onto the ideals of Texas Republican and former presidential candidate Ron Paul, who's known for his firm support of constitutional government. Congressman Paul has actively opposed several government programs he considered unnecessary in light of Constitution-based principles.

As the march continues, however, Vincent said the walkers have focused more on spreading the message and less on who inspired their actions. The campaign started Aug. 11 and is expected to conclude Sept. 2.

Vincent used a PowerPoint presentation with video clips to share the group's message. It started with a history lesson on the nation's founding documents, such as The Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, and progressed to what the group sees as the government's role in weakening the meaning behind them.

Vincent used the Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign as an example. Wearing a seat belt, he said, is a choice someone makes within his or her own property, and allowing government to mandate seat belt use limits a person's rights.

"It's your right to make mistakes and take risks," he said. "That (the seat belt law) was a step of giving up freedom in America."

Anna Dalton, 20, of Wausau liked what she heard.

"They definitely have some very good points," she said. "We do need government, but not to the extent that we have now."
