Praise for Paul

In his response to Assistant Editorial Editor Bill Thompson's column praising Rep. Ron Paul, the writer of "Passing on Paul" demonstrates a poor understanding of American constitutional philosophy.

Ron Paul is notorious for voting against anything that assumes a role for the federal government over anything not enumerated in the Constitution. Indeed, the 10th Amendment of the Bill of Rights reserves those powers not enumerated to the states and to the people, respectively.

It is disingenuous and incorrect to suggest that Dr. Ron Paul does not support the voting rights of minorities or that he wants to make it easier to victimize children. He simply asserts the U.S. Constitution says what it means and means what it says: that these issues are the responsibility of the states.

Without that understanding of our governmental structure, it is easy to see how someone uninformed on constitutional theory might assume that Ron Paul is simply on the wrong side. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Neither is it truthful to suggest that Ron Paul was blaming America for the terrorism on 9/11. If anything, he was blaming bad policy. It is bad policy to be meddling in the affairs of other nations, and I might ask the writer how he would feel if there were foreign troops on our soil.

I must enthusiastically agree with Bill Thompson. Ron Paul is our last, best hope for salvaging the American republic.
