I just watched the Thom Hartmann show on Air America. It was simulcast on C-SPAN. Someone called in about Ron Paul. He said he respected RP because of his honesty but disagreed with his extreme libertarian positions. From what I gathered watching the show, the guy believes anything that is good came because of some government law or program. He is completely ignorant of history. He cited Teddy Roosevelt's advocacy of big government as support. The old argument is "Even conservative hero TR supported a lot of government". TR was a progressive big-government Republican. I believe he stole the Black Hills from the Lakota.

Thom Hartmann is not ignorant nor is he "far left". He respectfully debates opposing viewpoints and always gives people a chance to speak, unlike real ignorant talking heads he's at least encouraging discussion although he always outlines his beliefs above others (as expected from talk radio). He's very open to discussion, you should give him a call and challenge him. Just make sure you know your history and have your talking points ready or he will school you. If he is mistaken then he will give you a chance to correct him, and as he even said he respects ideology (might be a good approach with him).

Of course he respects Ron Paul, and of course he disagrees with him. He supports federal funding of everything noble if properly managed by good people. Ron Paul believes we the people can do that ourselves thank you very much.

;-)

I wish we had more "liberals" like this guy.

Probably not the kind of people you are going to convert. Try the less extreme people first.

hell yeah it would... I was hoping Stacy Taylor would give RP the respect since they share so many damn views like decriminilization of drugs and restoration of constitutional principles, but he boned him on abortion issues and crap.

We should all call Thom and see if he's down to debate a REAL REPUBLICAN

I don't think Hartmann is ignorant but I do think he's wrong on almost everything and yes he is "far left". I don't think you can much farther left wing than this guy. He thinks taxes are awesome and should be higher for everyone. He thinks the government should run absolutely everything and business is completely evil and thinks civil service should be implemented for everyone including the draft. He's the most outspoken socialist on the airwaves.

That being said he's consistent and isn't some pseudo corporate liberal like an Obama or Hillary. He's more like Kucinich, wrong on everything but at least actually believes what he is saying.

I though you may have forgotten. Seriously, honest leftist who become libertarians become great advocates for liberty. Jacob Hornberger of the Future of Freedom Foundation (www.fff.org) is a hard core libertarian. He used to be an ACLU liberal.

There's nothing liberal about taxation. That's a lie given to you by those who pretend their conservative. Hartmann is a status quo guy, nothing more.

(imo of course)

Ted Roosevelt was the original neo-con!

TR was a rabid supporter of the immoral war with Spain. His "war hero" role in the conflict was greatly exxagerated by the yellow MSM of his day..

TR instigated a civil war in Columbia so that a puppet nation of Panama could be created and TR could build his canal. The canal was a great idea but TR didnt want to pay what Columbia was asking, so he intervened in their politics. That's bullshit. We should have just paid the extra cash instead of dealing dirty.

TR ruled like a dictator with no regard for constitutional limits on executive power

TR deliberately undermined his succcessor (Taft Sr.) by running as a 3rd party spoiler when the Constitutionalist minded Taft sought relection. This is how Woodrow Wilson got elected with just 40% of the vote.

Wilson then gave us the FED...the IRS...WW1...the disastrous Versaille Treaty (which begat WW2) and almost got us into League of Nations (forerunner of the UN and modern globalism)...Had Taft gotten reelected...none of Wilson's crap would have happened...We have TR to thank for Wilson

Any "conservative" who regards TR as a "hero" is misinformed. TR did as much damage to the Republic as his marxist cousin...FDR

I used to admire the guy until I read a thesis he wrote on why it was moral of frontiersman to take over and subjugate American Indians and their lands. He repeatedly called them "savages" and tried to justify what can only be described as Manifest Destiny on steroids.

"Leftist" economics is a joke. Don't they ever look at Lyndon B. Johnson's failed economic policies? Actually, his government programs made everything worse. It was the start of the neo conservative revolution, right before the neo cons from the Democratic Party hijacked the GOP during the Vietnam War. I actually used to be a socialist, economically speaking, but I did some research and now I'm fiscally conservative. I didn't stumble on Libertarianism due to American patriotism, or wanting something the founders started, I stumbled on it by looking for the *best* system of government. It is the best. Even moderate Libertarianism is better than whatever else you'll find out there.
