Alameda County Republicans Threaten Registrar of Voters and Seven
Elected Central Committee Candidates with Lawsuit

Livermore, CA (August 11, 2008) - On July 23, Mr. Paul Cummings,
Chairman of the Alameda

County Republican Central Committee (ACRCC), arrived at a meeting of
Constitutional Republicans in Livermore to announce that he would be
one of the complainants in a lawsuit against the Alameda County
Registrar of Voters and seven Constitutional Republicans, challenging
their election to the ACRCC in the June 2008 Primary. Mr. Cummings
emphasized that the lawsuit would seek reimbursement of legal costs if
the lawsuit were contested.

These statements by Mr. Cummings were witnessed by ten Constitutional
Republican members present at the meeting and by Mrs. Karen Wind, the
ACRCC Treasurer and a member of the State Bar, who accompanied
Mr. Cummings to the meeting.

It appears that Mr. Cummings, knowing that Constitutional Republicans
have gained a significant number of seats on the ACRCC, is attempting
to intimidate these individuals, using the threat of a costly lawsuit,
into not serving in the official capacities to which they have been
elected by the voters of Alameda County. This intimidation of citizens
running for public office by insular Republican Party leaders must not
be tolerated; else it will have a chilling effect on future elections
and will further shrink the number of qualified individuals seeking
public office. Consequently, we intend vigorously to defend ourselves
against this lawsuit, if and when it may be filed.

It is important to note that individuals elected to the ACRCC are
actually serving as unpaid volunteers for the Republican Party and its
candidates. At the present time, the ACRCC is finding it difficult
even to attract a quorum at its monthly meetings and to grow its
volunteer base, so it is very detrimental to the Republican Party to
threaten, rather than to embrace, these new volunteer members, many of
whom have been actively supporting Republican candidates and
participating in ACRCC activities even before their election.

We urge Mr. Cummings to withdraw this threatened lawsuit and to issue
a written apology for making these threats to the Constitutional
Republicans generally and the seven named individuals in
particular. We also urge him to promise not to oppose seating of the
elected and certified Constitutional Republicans on the ACRCC.

They're filing suit because these 7 are intimidating?

I'm not sure on what grounds the Republican Party would officially be filing suit. Apparently, the 7 Ron Paul republicans who got elected to the central committee believe THEY are being intimidated by these suits.

People who think freely are a threat to the flock.

The GOP claims these candidates were not registered Republican long enough to run for the Central Committee. Personally, I don't see how the candidates should be responsible for legal costs here, given that Registar of Voters gave their campaigns the green light, but the complainant is seeking $25,000 in legal costs from the ROV AND the candidates themselves. Clearly, the candidates are being intimidated imo.
