View Full Version : Dick Heller needs our help!

DC's only representation in the federal government is Eleanor Holmes Norton. She was unopposed for re-election last time. Dick Heller has agreed to let us circulate petitions to put him on the ballot to run against her. We need to raise a few thousand dollars this week to hire petitioners to get him on the ballot. If we fail, she will likely be unopposed again.

Long story short, he wanted to run on a fusion Libertarian-Republican ticket but was denied by the board of elections. Because of complications with the Supreme Court case, he missed the Republican deadline to file. Now we are circulating petitions to put him on the November ballot as a Libertarian with Republican support (the DC GOP HQ is collecting signatures on our petitions there!). There is a budding non-socialist alliance forming.

We need a few thousand valid signatures of registered DC voters and a looming deadline. If we could raise a few thousand dollars, the professional petitioners finishing up in WV now could come to DC.

If you could help, please contact me at DCforHeller@gmail.com or send checks payable to "DC for Heller" at PO Box 77159, Washington DC 20013. All federal contribution rules on disclosures and prohibitions apply.

Be one of the first to stand up for the man who stood up for us!

Great job Bradley. What is the deadline for the signatures?

It sounds like he probably won't do it, but a couple of TV or radio appearances would do wonders for that, as long as you mention money is needed for the petitions.

I mean, you could probably list 10 national TV and radio shows that would have him on. Just pick a couple that would be pretty much favorable to him.

Great job Bradley. What is the deadline for the signatures?

Thanks. We have until August 27th for Heller (and also Ron Paul delegate candidate Damien Ober who is running for shadow senator) but earlier and more sigs for Barr (their campaign "gave up" though in truth they never even tried and were, um, "counterproductive" here).

Several of us have been collecting signatures already. I got everyone at the DCYR meeting last night and Grover's last week, etc. (yes, Grover signed it himself--so have the DC GOP chairman, exec dir, council candidate, et al.).

Nancy is having a rooftop fundraiser for the effort on Saturday. Bruce is getting proposals from professional petitioners (we'll need them to supplement our efforts). James, Craig and others from the local Ron Paul activist crew are all helping out.

Yes, we are going to do it. :p We've got pledges for 1/4 of the money just today and scores of volunteers are out getting signatures (gratis). There is a big volunteer party Saturday where people are supposed to collect signatures first. The guy organizing the ballot petitioning's mother died unexpectedly Saturday which throw us for a loop.

Dick and Dane have been doing some media events including the Laura Ingraham (sp?) show. I don't think they've been plugging the donation part though, just talking about the court cases.

Feel free to mention it on the air as callers on shows though! :D

I saw Ballot Access News has Barr at 300.

Looking good. Another thought was that since this is a campaign with good name recognition and is actually endorsed by the Republicans, would it be up for funding from some of the higher echelons of the LP(perhaps regional or national)?

Yeah, that might be my fault. The truth is all three campaigns have all three petitions and getting their volunteers out separately. There are so many different people collecting independently (most probably just a handful each), that no one knows how many signatures we have or how many all of the volunteers will get before the dates we told them to get them back to us.

We should be able to pull it off for Heller and Ober, but it is highly unlikely that Barr will get on the ballot in DC unless we raise a miracle. Barr needs nearly 4k valid sigs in eight days. We need few signatures, have collected more already, and have more time for Heller and Ober. We are NOT complacent--it is very doable but not a sure thing without some professional help.

Ok folks,

The moment you've all been waiting for... DCforHeller.com is now online!

Well, sorta. As of this post, we have the snail mail donation page online, which will be the first of many updates to the website.

http://dcforheller.com/

If I were you, I would set this as my homepage so that you will always be up to date with the campaign. :D

Also...

DC for Heller is having a fundraiser on Saturday the 16th of this month.

Please join DC for Heller supporters in the heart of Washington on Pennsylvania Ave for light fare, drinks, and an auction to help elect Rich Heller as the D.C. Delegate to the U.S. Congress. Rich Heller's recent Supreme Court win striking down the Draconian D.C. handgun law has paved the way for all American citizens' Constitutional right under the 2nd Amendment to bear arms in the home.

This event is an opportunity to support Mr. Heller's election to Congress in order to work for other fundamental civil liberties guaranteed by our Constitution that have been eroded by the government. Candidate Heller is an advocate of government accountability, civil liberties and individual rights.

Heller stood up for our rights, let's stand up for Rich Heller.

Give 'em Heller for a change!

Interesting. I just read that even though a Delegate doesn't have a vote on the final passage of legislation, he or she can serve on and vote with committees. That's where most of the action happens anyway.

I still like how D.C. residents have "taxation without representation" on their license plates. Although I'm sure they're aware of the saying that taxation with representation isn't much better.

Running against Eleanor Holmes Norton in DC?

Even if he gets on the ballot, he'd need a miracle to crack 20%.

He'd have a better chance of being elected Queen of England than getting elected as a conservative in DC.

Good, I would definitely prefer that instead of waiting for the check to cash ;)

If Heller makes the petition requirement, I hope they rally the GOP together with the Libertarians to at least make a tough race out of it.

THE DC Libertarian Party Kickoff!
Help put the DC metro Libertarians on the Map!
We need volunteers to put the LP candidates on the ballot--and get major party status!

Bob Barr for President

Dick Heller for Delegate to Congress

Damien Ober for Shadow Senator

For the record, I'm a member of the DC Republican Committee, former Ron Paul legislative staffer, and current Bob Barr presidential elector candidate to the electoral college. Although a registered Republican in DC, I did send in my dues to the LP the day Barr got the nomination (DC does not currently recognize LP registration).

The LP slate in DC consists of Barr/WAR for the presidential ticket, Dick Heller (who overturned the handgun ban at the Supreme Court) for Delegate to Congress and Damien Ober for shadow senator. I engineered a gentlemen's agreement between the DC LP (such as it is) and DC GOP: The LP is not running a candidate against Republican incumbent Carol Schwartz, and the Republican candidate for Delegate to Congress is going to withdraw and endorse Dick Heller when he makes his formal, public announcement (the DC GOP will be supporting Heller in other ways). It is possible some other members will run for the non-partisan ANC (Advisory Neighborhood Commissions) http://anc.dc.gov/anc/site/default.asp (the deadlines are later than for other offices).

For identification purposes only and explicitly not implying organizational endorsements, the three Barr presidential elector candidates to the electoral college for DC include Rob Kampia of MPP who seconded Barr's nomination at the convention, Stacie Rumenap who is Executive Director of Stop Child Predatorswww.stopchildpredators.org, and J. Bradley Jansen, director of the Center for Financial Privacy and Human Rights http://www.financialprivacy.org/.

We are currently circulating signatures for all of the LP candidates--and could use help! Even out of "state"ers are welcome to come and assist us. We won't know if we were successful until after your deadline.

Right now the Heller campaign website has a petition to draft him to run: http://dcforheller.com/ and will soon be accepting online donations and will post other information on issues, etc. The address for the campaign is DC for Heller at PO Box 77159, Washington, DC 20013 (make checks payable to "DC for Heller"). The Facebook page is http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=21857286891&ref=ts; everyone is encouraged to "friend" the campaign and invite others. They can email me at DCforHeller@gmail.com with any questions. Dick Heller has been the DC LP treasurer for the past several years and was responsible for getting Michael Badnarik on the ballot four years ago. The attached document was circulated at the Ron Paul rEVOLution March and Rally. When Heller gets over 7,500 votes for delegate to Congress with Republican support in a one-on-one race with incumbent Eleanor Holmes Norton, the LP will have "major party" status along with the Republicans, Democrats and DC Statehood Green Parties in DC.

Steve Dasbach, among others, spoke at the National Press Club urging Dick Heller to run:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQZxjQ302Lw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Izts2x2u_L4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqnL1bi7ncM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYACOse6DLQ

Heller spoke at the charter meeting of the DC Republican Liberty Caucus and is doing lots of TV, radio and print interviews because of the court case, his gun registration and the new lawsuit. Once we get his scheduling harmonized, hopefully that will be integrated into the website.

[Some background on the party affiliation question: Because of the gag order with the Supreme Court case, the ballot petitioning deadline past to run on the Republican line. Therefore, Mr. Heller decided to run for Delegate to Congress from DC as a Libertarian with DC GOP support for that bid. Ideally, he would have run on a Libertarian-Republican fusion ticket, but the DC Board of Elections and Ethics does not permit fusion tickets: "Mr. Heller's challenge to Ms. Norton is welcomed in the spirit of debate and as his campaign unfolds we look forward him hearing about some of his ideas to better DC," stated Robert J. Kabel, Chair of the District of Columbia Republican Committee.]

Damien Ober is running an artistic campaign for "shadow senator" (the office we would have if DC had senators). His Facebook page is herehttp://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=15989579693&ref=ts, his YouTube page is here http://www.youtube.com/user/shadowdc2008, and the campaign email is shadowdc@verizon.net.

Ron Paul delegate candidates to the Republican national convention are still quite active in DC and include the current Republican candidate for Delegate to Congress Adrian Salsgiver, LP shadow senator candidate Damien Ober, half of the new members of the DC Republican Committee, and most of the organization of the Heller campaign: treasurer James Hendrickson, general counsel Craig Max, and the manager J. Bradley Jansen, et al.

In addition, the charter meeting of the DC chapter of the Republican Liberty Caucus met recently and had Dick Heller as the keynote speaker.

Dick Heller will pick up his gun registration Monday!

Come meet us at the police station across from the Judiciary Square metro stop Monday morning, August 18th, at 10. He and Dane von Breichenruchart of the US Bill of Rights Foundation will be available for questions afterwards on the front steps.

Dick Heller, who had to get the US Supreme Court to direct the city to allow him to exercise his constitutional right, is happy to have a resolution to this stage of the fight. He will continue to work with the city until they get it right. Unfortunately, at this stage, "Heller II" has already been filed to make sure DC complies with the Supreme Court ruling.

DC citizens are also drafting Dick Heller for Congress and will be meeting tomorrow to circulate petitions to put him on the ballot:

Where: L'Enfant Metro Station Entrance (7th St & Maryland Ave SW)

When: 11:00am Saturday August 16th and Sunday August 17th

We need ballot access petition signatures for Bob Barr, Dick Heller, and Damien Ober. We all can meet up at the L'Enfant Metro Station Entrance at 11:00am on Saturday and Sunday, designate locations for everyone, and then proceed to go around the city collecting signatures. Time is running out and this is your chance to actually get involved in grassroots politics in your area. If you are interested in helping out send me an email so I know how many petitions and clipboards I need. Also if you want petitions so you can collect signatures on your own time send me an email.
