8/11/07 was the date of the Ames Straw Poll. What a great day for the Ron Paul campaign!
I remember it was hot as hell and Ron Paul fans from all over America converged on Ames to show their support. I stood in the sun with a 4x8 for hours trying to lure fellow republicans into the RP tent to learn something about genuine conservatism.
Remember the parade of patriots around the Iowa State Center - chanting "Ron Paul"? (I think we frightened some people).
Remember the mosh pit for Dr. Paul's speech?
I remember coming face-to-face with some Iowans who weren't happy we were there. It felt purposeful to stand our ground yet take the higher road...to teach about peace in a party enamored with war.
Unfortunately I also remember that Mrs. Paul had some health problems that day.
I'll always enjoy my memories of Ames and I'll say a prayer for Carol tonight.
