View Full Version : ADVICE NEEDED: Ways to invest in PMs via an IRA roll-over?

I'm currently trying to talk to my mother about getting out of the dollar because of what's going on with our economy and our government's fiscal and monetary irresponsibility. I don't want her to lose her retirement money in the event of a crisis. She had a lot of her retirement money in mutual funds that invested a lot in the financial sectors. That isn't such a good idea anymore, obviously... <_<

Essentially I'm just advising her to put 20-25% of her money into PM's in order to hedge her bets. As I've been explaining the situation to her, she's begun to come around and agrees that she needs to do something. However, I really can't give her any practical advice on who she could roll over funds with, because I don't know about which companies are reliable and which ones aren't. I'm a college student. What do I know about IRAs? :P

So I'm hoping to get some help in that regard. I thought now was a good time to ask, seeing as the metals are coming down in price some. So does anyone here have any experience with this sort of thing?

Cheers.

I guess I'm trying to separate the chaff from the wheat. Figure out who's a legit investment company and who might be some scam artist in a Louisiana swamp.

You can follow the "permanentportfolio" balance advice from Harry Browne and DIY (e.g., 25% gold, 25% US Treasuries, etc. etc.).

Nobody knows what will happen next (i.e., gold versus a particular stock tip or trend).

I happen to think it's all a scam (ALL OF IT!) and your job/skill/income is the most important path to wealth. Don't put all those eggs in any ONE basket.

Physical gold in your IRA:

Also with a IRA roll-over at schwab and other brokerage firms, you can invest in normal stocks and ETFs such as GLD, SLV, DBA, USO, etc...

If you form an LLC for yourself you can do what is known as a "self-directed IRA". With that you can purchase almost anything you want since you get checkbook control. e-bullion counts...and I think even physically owning your own PM counts as well.

google "self-directed IRA". There are books on the subject and it is recommended as the best way to have an IRA because you have the most control over it.
