Michael Chertoff has an interesting background (1). He's the son of a rabbi and the grandson of a highly regarded Talmudic scholar, Rabbi Paul Chertoff. Rudolph Giuliani, then U.S. attorney for Manhattan, hired him as a prosecutor. When the Clinton administration took office, he was THE ONLY U.S. attorney not replaced. By many accounts, he holds dual citizenship -- Israeli and U.S.

Shouldn't these dual citizenship situations, regardless of country, be considered conflicts of interest - particularly when the holder is being considered for sensitive and high level positions in the U.S. government?? Secretary of Homeland Security, in today's scheme of things, is one of the most powerful positions in Washington. Apparently, the Senate thought otherwise. He was approved by a vote of 98 - 0.

Chertoff HEADED THE CRIMINAL DIVISION OF THE FBI from 2001 to 2003 and was apparently INDIFFERENT TO A FULL-SCALE INVESTIGATION OF 9/11 destruction and crash sites as well as criminal investigation of the events surrounding the attacks. However, he DISTINGUISHED HIMSELF WHEN IDENTIFYING ALL 19 HIJACKERS shortly after 9/11. Chertoff also collaborated with Viet Dinh in WRITING THE USA PATRIOT ACT.

He was also the point man for the Bush administration's strenuous effort at comprehensive immigration reform* that failed to pass the Senate in June 2007 (2).

* Ostensibly, doublespeak for a free pass with benefits after a formal slap on the wrist

He has a dual citizenship. SO I am curious, with his authoring of the Patriot Act, his willingness to leave the borders WIDE OPEN etc.. who does he really serve?
