Commentary: Paul supporter slips through McCain phalanx

Once Sen. John McCain became the "presumptive" Republican nominee for president, the phalanx of McCain staffers swung into action to make sure that all our Arizona delegates and alternates to the Republican National Convention would be properly indoctrinated McCain supporters. However, even though I was Arizona co-chairman for the Ron Paul campaign, I managed to slip through the phalanx and get elected.

I am a lifelong activist registered Republican and I certainly understand the "loyalty" issue and I will be voting for McCain at the convention. But there are some significant philosophical issues that Rep. Ron Paul raised during his campaign and I am hoping to have an opportunity to move the Republican Party back in the direction of these Barry Goldwater/Ronald Reagan principles.

McCain and Paul are both outstanding Americans whom I have the privilege to know since the early 1980s. I met McCain shortly after he came to Arizona and I was very impressed. I worked on his first campaign and have admired many of his strong convictions. However, there are some issues that are very important to our country and our party where we have drifted away from the strong limited government/pro-individual freedom philosophical principles that were set forth by our Founding Fathers and best exemplified in more recent years by Goldwater and Reagan. These principles need to be addressed by the Republican Party and I am hoping that my involvement at our national convention will provide such an opportunity.

One of the ways that I hope to accomplish this is to be involved in the Platform Committee. There is an interactive Web site that is very easy to use for any interested Republican and I have already posted several suggestions that I hope to see considered by our Platform Committee members. These have to do with the role of the Federal Reserve, the IRS, the Department of Education, our foreign policy, our War on Drugs, and other related issues. Since I am a native Minnesotan, I am looking forward to the excitement of discussing these important issues in my home state. I certainly hope that the convention will not just be a coronation but rather will involve a meaningful debate of fundamental philosophy.

We will see if "one who slipped through" can have any impact.

I love how "media friendly" his response was.

How the hell can you put mccain and paul into one meaning and using they "both" are great. Fuck that... I would NEVER even allow mccain and paul to be discussed like that to be AT ALL on the same level.

Mccain sucks, I just hope this isn't some bullshit trick to try and get people thinking that there are ron paul supporters and or delegates who are trying to show other delegates who are pro-ron paul to vote for mccain because they MIGHT be able to get SOME platform thoughts dealt with at the convention.

It is either some b.s. trick or ACTUAL honesty and I find it hard to believe most any delegates are really wanting to be honest with this election and INSTEAD would rather vote based on party alliance.

Hey we can't let the democrats win right?
Hey we can't let the republicans win right?
Who cares what our presumptive nominee actually stands for because all we need to care about is OUR party winning right?

Fuck that thinking.

So he's casting his delegate vote for McCain eventhough he was on Paul's campaign staff? HUH? Way to stick to your principles buddy.

I actually think McCain isn't that much worse than alot of other GOP "conservatives". I mean, at least he admits he has some democrat ideas. That is different than Huckabee or Romney, who also clothe themselves in "conservative" robes.

Although, McCain finally sold out. They all do...He still is better than Obama, but it isn't worth it. Liberty all the way with Barr or Baldwin!

In some places (depends on State), you either vote for your "assigned" candidate, or you are escorted out of the convention and forbidden from ever working in the Republican Party again.

But that's not what he said, or at least how I took it. He talks about understanding party loyalty and he will vote for McCain. I'd take it differently if he at least made a reference to being forced to vote for McCain.

Maybe Arizona requires him to vote McCain. Or maybe Arizona "requires" him to vote McCain.

Luckily the vote doesn't really matter. It's not like Paul is 5 delegates shy of the nomination.

Your thinking reminds me of having someone say to you, "I love you but I can't be around you anymore".

Way to go on sticking to your principles...

The "maverick" John McCain of 2000 has morphed into George W. McCain in 2008- about as "maverick" as a Stepford wife...
