they really don't want to put a plane in the air with 3 passengers.

The cheapest days to fly (in either direction) are Tuesday-Thursday. Flying in the Thursday prior to the rally probably isn't an option for most people. However, catching a ride to MN during the weekend, then flying back home on Wednesday may save a lot of money.
