This is taken from the April 2005 Charlie Rose show where Freshman Fred gives his interpretation of the constitution.

WOW! There's some brutal honesty for ya..."The primary goal of government is to protect itself."

IN all fairness, it seems like that might have been taken out of context. I'm not sure he got to finish his sentence.

I never claimed to be playing fair :D

The full video is linked in my other Digg thread. It's a 58 minute video and this comment is at about the 5 minute mark. It's not very out of context at all with the rest of his conversation.

"The primary goal of government is to protect itself."

Well I won't argue that this is what it has become.

Did he say "the rights of society"?

Funny, I thought rights only belonged to individuals. Didn't know "society" need them too.

Society does not exist in reality, it is an ABSTRACTION for the aggregation of all of the individuals in a particular area. An abstract can not have a "Right".

I thought that the primary purpose of government was to protect our rights?

Actually I agree with him. He's right, the primary goal of government is to protect itself. The fact he said it jumps him up past hunter in my head.

Raz: for your website, Thompson was in the Senate from 1994-2003. I'm not sure why the video title you gave it says 2005.

Thanks for catching that Foo, it was April 1995 not 2005. I've updated the post.
btw, I just woke up from a power nap (ok I passed out in my chair) and found the other Fred digg on the top of the Popular list. I feel like Karl Rove, lol :D
