How much do college admissions essays matter?

Excerpts from this article:

College-Admission-Essay.com charges students $199 to have a professional writer edit a 500-word essay. For services from a counselor, the company charges $150 per hour, with discounts for multiple hours [***for each college?] . The counselors also provide general college counseling...

She said company counselors know what admissions officers are seeking and how to "elaborate the achievements and strengthen the grammar, context and content of the essays, so that they stand out apart from the numbers and details of their application."

I'll bet the colleges who accept these "excellent" candidates are unpleasantly surprised by their incoming freshman class academic results that contribute to the academic ranking of the college.

Years ago, there were articles where parents were doing the projects for their elementary school students, as well, even for competition submittals.

So, why should we be surprised to find that students raised with such "values" lie and cheat in the corporate world, as well?

"Survivor" and "Apprentice" reinforce the same "do whatever to get ahead", as well.
