View Full Version : Should There Be a 3rd Party Debate?

Anyone have any thoughts on whether there should be a 3rd party debate with Barr, Baldwin, Nader and McKinney. This could provide a forum to debate monetary/foreign/social/fiscal/economic/immigration/civil/etc. policies. It would be an opportunity for them to unite for the purpose of having a real discussion of issues facing our country. McCain and Obama would be invited, but of course would not attend.
Has this ever happened before? If not, any idea why? Who would make a good moderator?

They have had these in the past on CSPAN. They were great and I assume they will do it again.

Sure...why not? They need all the votes they can get...even with little media exposure from the debate, being in such a debate should get them some more votes.

That is a great idea. I want to have a third party shindig here in my town at the park ..or somewhere. The only active third parties i know of are the Green Party and the LP. I could always call it "Liberty Festival" and invite the ACLU also. I am going to bring it up..what the heck. I know tons of musicians who will play..why not. tones

Nobody would watch :/ We need to focus on getting at least one third party candidate into the mainstream debates.

Don Meinhausen, who worked in the Badnarik campaign in '04, pushed really hard to make the first Cobb-Badnarik debate happen--he called the NY LP state Chair (me) a couple of times each day to finalize details and push for the biggest C-Span turnout possible for the Manhattan taping. People from both the Green and LP parties came in from PA and beyond to attend. I think a re-do this year would be equally electrifying (especially if done in Georgia, where two of the 3rd party candidates come from), but it requires a tenacious person to coordinate all the candidates to attend on the same day and place.

i would disagree c-span puts one on because it gets good viewership, i would watch this years 3rd party debate they put on,last debate was pretty good and the yr harry browne was running, well i thank harry browne for opening my eyes to the ron paul message;) me watching c-span 3rd party debate is why i left the democratic party for the libertarian party and eventually heard ron paul's message and became a republican, so id encourage more 3rd party debates;)

They should have McCain, and Obama in these debates. The debate would be pretty useless without them. America's too dumb for 3rd parties, and what they say.
We vote if they can dance ,or not. :D

I agree, but McCain and Obama get equal time as all the other candidates.

Why bother? I already know that the LP is the only right way, no need, unless we manage to garner some media attention ;)

but if it wasn't for a 3rd Party debate, i would probably be a mindless democrat still,so i would assume many others are opened up to a new message when they watch

Of course! A 3rd Party debate is productive, it's more about a mainstream channel picking up the event like MTV or simply PBS. Some channel and get a little media attention for it. Though the people should focus on getting a 3rd party candidate in the National Debates.

I'm telling you, the best idea would to be have all third parties, plus Obama and McCain in a debate (a REAL debate...not this "you have 90 seconds to spew detritus" nonsense) that is moderated by Dr. Paul.
