So here's the news today:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7494996.stm

Basically the Czech politicians sold out their people - surprised? - who almost unanimously are against hosting our radar base. I live in the Czech Republic and I see some of the emotion of the people here. Here's my feelings on it:

1) More of my money (yes, the US is one of the only countries on Earth that still taxes its citizens living abroad) blown on building an empire.

2) Russian missiles will be targeted on this harmless and tiny nation (and me) only because it's become a pawn in our games

3) Another population will hate us as we force this base on them, only a decade after they got rid of the last foreign troops (Soviets)

4) My country is no safer as a result, only succeeding in pissing off Russia, almost all of Europe, and furthering our horrible image abroad.

I feel like yelling at somebody... my representative, embassy, anyone, but it changes nothing. My only hope is the Czech parliament has enough sack left to not ratify this pile of crap.

We got one of your USA run spy bases here in the UK, too. It's a beast.

Well worth watching all 3 parts of that - the spy base stuff starts @ the 3 minute mark on part 1 and continues through.

The empire crumbles within and we continue to antagonize people without, yet people think it will all last forever withal...

We're trying to get this house in order. It's like cleaning without removing the children from the area first.

Thanks for the tidbit of education, both of you. We need your perspective.

I hear you my friend. We got the same problem in Poland :(
BTW OP - do you think your president will sign that agreement? He's a bit anti type, but I don't know his stance on this matter (maybe anti-EU but pro-US?).

Well, I didn't get to vote for the president because I'm an American citizen, not a Czech one (though sometimes I wish I were). The deal has already been signed, but it must be ratified by the Czech Parliament, where I'm hoping the opposition parties really pull through and kill it. I guess we'll see :-( The US seems quite good at pressuring the politicians here into compliance, againce the wishes of their own people.

I'm extra-sad about what we're doing to Poland. Poland was actually one of the few European countries left where the population generally thought highly of us. So much for that.

They target eastern, post-soviet territories. I bet it's not a coincidence. AFAIR around 70% of people in Czech Rep. and Poland disagrees with this and yet, politicians say "we do not care". Hey, it's that fameous democracy, right? ;)
