There was much to dislike about Senator Jesse Helms but there was much to like about him too. I disagreed with much of his desire to bring his religious beliefs into politics he was also one of the modern 'founders' of small government.

Before there was Dr. No there was Senator No.

His 1973 book after his first election and chapters of that book are:

"When Free Men Shall Stand: A Sobering Look at the Supertaxing, Superspending, Superbureaucracy in Washington.

Chapters:
The Spiritual Rebirth Of Our Nation
The Roots of Freedom
The State of Religion
Freedom is the Basis of Prosperity
And What of the Role of Business
Taxation!
Budget
Inflation
An Echo of Will Rogers
The Right to Life
Justice and the Welfare State
The Work-Less Ethic
The Santa Clause Syndrome
A Second Look at Foreign Aid
Bad Debts
Another Kind of Giveaway
Ropes to the Hangman
A School Bus to Equality
Fourth of July
School Prayer
Who's in Charge
Real Strength

Foreign Aid: The really stupendous cover-up of modern times had not been Watergate, but the vast sums of money this county has exported overseas... to many foreign countries which could not be considered 'underdeveloped' by any stretch of the imagination."
-J. Helms
I'm sure there are some topics that people will hate and others that say hey this guy was a patriot.

Remember this is 1976 (not '73 as stated above)...

On Supertaxation: "According to the Tax Foundation, the average taxpayer works from January 1 to April 30 for the sole benefit of the government. All sorts of devices have been contrived... to get the most possible feathers from the goose with the fewest possible squawks."

On Superspending: "...hardly a member of Congress for the last thirty years has had the vaguest notion about the contents of the budget. If you started when the budget was submitted, and you worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, you would not be ready to vote on the FY 1977 budget until July 21, 2020. It would take you that long to study the budget at a million dollars an hour."
