View Full Version : Abandon Meetup for Facebook?

Are there any significant disadvantages to completely abandoning ronpaul.meetup.com? There are 1,366 "active" meetup groups left. If each organizer pays $72 a year and each organizer runs the maximum three allowed groups, we're collectively spending over $32,000 a year on Meetup. Many meetup users have never actually participated in any event, and many have not visited the Meetup site in months.

Facebook, on the other hand, is completely free, has a larger user base, more robust web site, and comparable event planning and RSVP facilities. Additionally, people are more likely to stick around since many use Facebook every day.

Can people view content on Facebook if they're not a part of the group, yet?

That would be up to each meetup group. I highly doubt it would happen with many of them. I personally do not like facebook at all.

Not everyone is into facebook. Of course, not everyone is into meetups. How about C. All of the above?

IMO, the only benefit to meetup is that the official Ron Paul 2008 site linked to it.

Otherwise, the site is just awful.

In my opinion Yahoo! Groups (http://groups.yahoo.com/) is the best free Meetup-style resource. There is also Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/). What's important is that Ron Paul supporters stay connected one way or another.

I'm not that familiar with facebook, but atleast it's free.

meetup charges a hefty fee especially for the limited the activity you can do. I can't email multiple groups in a single message and they limit how many messages I send.

What does meetup offer that facebook does not?

meetup is not ideal. I would prefer like google or yahoo groups. I joined facebook for a day and had over 200 e-mails of Vampire, Cuddles, and all kinds of bull crap. Not worth the mess that facebook has become.

You just need to learn how to set your privacy options. Are you sure you're not talking about MySpace?

make sure all of the data in your facebook profile is false so you throw off the data mining and profiling and marketing algorithms

i hear the company who owns Facebook is privacy-challenged, so-to-speak.

If each organizer pays $72 a year

It costs money to start a Meetup?

Facebook is way too intrusive! The reason why I think MeetUp is best, is because it is independent and dedicated to solely serving groups. It is not owned by some media conglomerate or back door government company.

The problem with unresponsive members is widespread and not concentrated to just MeetUp. There are ways to weed out unresponsive members on MeetUp simply by checking the directory for "inactive members"

Meetup is still pretty active I wouldn't disregard it yet. Face book is a social network like Myspace not worth it in my opinion.
