Never thought about the similarities between us "paleocons" and the wizard, but it's as simple as, "Oh, you've always had the power to go home again!"

The scene when they all meet the Wizard is just chock full of allegory. William Jennings Bryan, the Cowardly Lion, gets his whiskers singed for standing too close the the Wizard.
L. Frank Baum was just a big ol' Populist who wanted bimetallism, and got a little cranky about it. I just love that in the book, Dorothy's slippers that solve all of her problems are silver.
