Taking those gory driver's ed videos to the next level: (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/northcounty/20080530-9999-lz1mc30brush.html)

Many juniors and seniors were driven to tears – a few to near hysterics – May 26 when a uniformed police officer arrived in several classrooms to notify them that a fellow student had been killed in a drunken-driving accident.

The officer read a brief eulogy, placed a rose on the deceased student’s seat, then left the class members to process their thoughts and emotions for the next hour.

The program, titled “Every 15 Minutes,” was designed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Its title refers to the frequency in which a person somewhere in the country dies in an alcohol-related traffic accident.

About 10 a.m., students were called to the athletic stadium, where they learned that their classmates had not died. There, a group of seniors, police officers and firefighters staged a startlingly realistic alcohol-induced fatal car crash. The students who had purportedly died portrayed ghostly apparitions encircling the scene.

Though the deception left some teens temporarily confused and angry, if it makes even one student think twice before getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated, it is worth the price, said California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Newbury, who orchestrates the program at local high schools.

“If I sit there and lecture somebody in a nice way, it's going to go in one ear and out the other,” he said. “In today's world, where they have all sorts of gore and fantastic things that kids can access on the computer, if you want to compete with that, you have to jar them emotionally.

“I want them to be an emotional wreck. I don't want them to have to live through this for real.”

Hey, while we are at it, we should expand this program to other crimes.

Drug abuse: Let's convince parents its their duty to talk to thier kids. Have the police show up at their door and tell them their kid has been found dead of a drug overdose! Cool idea.

Speeding: Again, have the PD show up at spouse's door and tell them their love one is dead careening off an overpass.

Tax Evasion: IRS can routinely sent letters demanding $100,000 in back taxes. A "just kidding" letter can go a week later. No harm no foul.

They DO THIS at the high school here!!! They have the grim reaper (no, I am not joking) come in, and escort the "dead" kids out of class. It's wild.

Last I knew about MADD, the founder and former CEO left the organization because it's become more of a witch hunt organization more in-tune with prohibitionists than with those who are truly concerned about public safety.

MADD = one of the very worst police state enabling groups out there.

Good for the former CEO.

She's a good person, I just wish she'd be more outspoken about the turn this organization took. From Wikipedia:

Criticisms

[edit]
Candy Lightner's departure

By 1985, many MADD leaders were calling for the criminalization of all driving after drinking any amount of alcoholic beverage. Ms. Lightner disagreed with this aim and said that police ought to be concentrating their resources on arresting drunk drivers, not those drivers who happen to have been drinking.

Lightner stated that MADD "has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned … I didn't start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving".[31]

They did this at my high school, but we knew this was an act. They also played a loud..erm...heartbeat monitor over the intercom every 15 minutes.

1) MADD, 2) DARE and 3) E15M (actual death of classmate scare/scam)

I thought these were all working out "just fine" - by teaching kids the exact opposite of personal responsibility!

1). It's all about power and corruption (plays on our fear and compassion). Road-side stops to check your car, insurance, your record: Where are you going? ACHTUNG! ...just checking your papers (breath, DNA via mouth swab or your blood) just to see if they are in order... Cooperate or meet the Taser!

2) Not working out too well! What else are they spinning kids 'NOT' to try? Oops, told 'em about daddy, now he is in prison, mom's working 3 jobs and the kid becomes a new addict to escape feeling guilty about it all.

3) That was hurtful and not helpful. Did they give any tips on how to get drunk and still stay out of trouble? The Police are more apt to lie and trick you [points gun right in your face and says. "I'm from the gov and here to help you."] Can't trust 'em next time, so get a lawyer before saying anything. [TIP: the carbohydrates in the 'free' pretzels and nuts DELAYS the effect of the booze so that you will buy more drinks before you feel the buzz. Your BA peaks 15 minutes AFTER you drive away from bar and swerve across the double yellow lines... Drive real careful and slow to be rewarded with a DUI]

Nothing to fear - Didn't do anything wrong? They will find something since there are so many new laws to pick from.

I want to trust the police and hate to see this stuff slipping to the dark side - power corrupts. Liberty is lost in small steps…

P.S. I do like the idea of welding a 4" dagger to the center of the steering wheel after the first DUI accident to help prevent recidivism... A sensor also automatically shuts off the engine if the blade is "touched". Unfortunately, this system would also discourage a sober, designated driver (for this vehicle).
