Yesterday Ron Paul appeared in San Diego for a private brunch followed by a rally and book signing. I was fortunate to be in attendance. I had been discussing an idea for a “Freedom Walk” from Green Bay, WI to Minneapolis with members of the Ron Paul activist community, and availed myself of the opportunity to talk about the idea with Dr. Paul and several members of his staff.

Dr. Paul loves the idea of a Freedom Walk to the Republican National convention host city and has agreed to lead us into the city for the last portion of the Walk!

Can you envision Dr. Paul leading a peaceful, organized force of 25,000 friends of freedom into the city, converging at a rally where a like number of liberty lovers are gathered? It turns out that Congressman Paul has been planning for and is very desirous to see a substantial rally in Minneapolis coincident with the RNC. The idea of a Freedom Walk dovetails very nicely with the campaign’s plans for a big rally. It also coincides with Ron Paul’s plan to announce at that place and time his new Foundation which will carry the Freedom Movement forward after the RNC.

Dr. Paul is also very adamant that this be a peaceful, non-violent, positive exercise in Freedom. I would like to note that he has often spoken of the example of Gandhi and non-violent civil disobedience. The proposed walk would be roughly the same distance and take the same number of days as Gandhi’s Salt March which led to the independence of India from British colonialism (and which was the beginning of a campaign of civil disobedience against an UNFAIR TAX on the production of salt).

The specifics of this Walk and rally are in the development stage. The current conception is this:

-Walk begins in Green Bay, WI at Lambeau Field on August 11 at the Packers’ Monday Night Football home season opener. Ron Paul leads us on the first few miles “kick off” the Walk.

-Gandhi started with 87 walkers committed to going the distance...we will start with no less than this number committed to walking the heartland of America for 251 miles and 3 weeks.

-There will be a logistical team to manage food, water, supplies, belongings, sleeping arrangements ect for the walkers. There will be a medical team.

-There will be a money bomb to raise funds for the project including assisting walkers with their expenses.

-Walkers will be Ambassadors of Liberty, distributing literature and talking to citizens in the dozens of towns they will pass through on the route. Some of the larger cities we will pass through include Wausau and Eau Claire.

-Ron Paul rejoins the Walk for the last leg leading a peaceful force of 25,000 into St. Paul 3 weeks later converging at a rally. Ron Paul announces his new Foundation.

-There is also the idea of holding a “Constitutionalist Convention” in a hotel ballroom parallel to the RNC. We will gather to meet, draft and vote on resolutions, form committees of Dr. Paul’s new organization and conduct similar business.

It is hoped that the July 12 rally and July 13 Convention in Washington DC will be precursors to and prepare the ground for the Minneapolis events. It is not meant to replace those events or efforts or be in competition.

A number of Ron Paul organizers and Freedom activists across the country are already on board with the general thrust of this plan. Please be a part of developing, shaping and putting into practice this vision. We hope that you can see the huge potential here and want to act on it and be a part of it. An organizing committee is forming now.

There will be a teleconference to discuss this on Monday night:

I'm really stoked re this walk. I'm seriously planning to be there in support.

Sorry I missed the call. I'll be putting a board on the Future Gold Forum (http://futuregold.org/forum/index.php). For any volunteers, I'll create editable web space there, as well. There can be multiple web spaces for locallized groups, too.

Anyone interested can get in touch via the secure email form (http://ronpaul.futuregold.org/email.php) on the FG site.

This is a great idea. This will probably attract more media attention than the rally in D.C. I'm also glad to see Ron Paul take the lead on the Freedom Foundation too. We need this Foundation to endorse people running for public office that will put America (and the Constitution) first.

As a member of the DC march team, I'm pretty sure this walk will bring more media than the DC march. But I think it's going to be so much more.

It's like we did everything locally during the campaign, then Grannies did our first national rally, now we're doing our first national march in DC, and now this Freedom Walk takes it into longer-term, more sustained marches and actions.

It's happening right before our eyes. We're becoming mobilized and we're taking on greater challenges.

Great job people. Three Cheers for Freedom Walk 08!

I believe timing of the Walk and followup meeting are critical!!

If they occur during normal business hours of the convention, the media might ignore the Ron Paul proceedings altogether.

If I remember correctly, most of the activities at the convention occur at Prime time for television, so the Ron Paul meeting could occur PRIOR to the delegates going to the RNC. This might give them a chance to see it on TV, or even participate!

Why not give invitations to all the delegates to come over and have a talk. Not to force our ideas on them, but to open up the floor for open and frank discussion about the direction of our country.

If they would at least be willing to listen, you could probably convince some to see that the Republican Party has gone astray. You never know what this could cause to happen at the RNC.

Everything is still up in the air, but the last I heard was arriving before the convention so delegates can walk a stretch with us, if they wish. Sounding like multiple routes too, kinda like a convergance. We are talking about two main walk routes (so far;)). One from Green Bay, the other from Ames. Would be great to get all kinds of groups to... converge with the walkers. Bikers, Car Clubs...; Freedom Lovers, hell, I'll pedal from Lady Liberty to Ames and then start walking if we have the support.

First we March, than we walk, winning every step

The interest in doing a Great American Walk for Freedom has swelled significantly in the first week of exploring the idea. It looks like there will be some kind of Walk for Freedom to Minneapolis ending at Ron Paul’s big rally there on September 1st or 2nd. If all goes according to plan and we pull our Walk off properly, Ron Paul will join us for the final few miles. My vision: Ron Paul leading 25,000 walkers into the city for a Grand Finale rally (hey, think big..why not?).

Right now we are looking at two routes: from Green Bay to Minneapolis and from Ames, Iowa to Minneapolis.

We would like to start each route with 500 people (78 minimum, the number that Gandhi had when he started the Salt March, 500 is what MLK walked with to Montgomery; we already have 40 pledged to walk the distance!).

We are thinking in terms of each walker as an Ambassador of Freedom. We would like to focus not just on making a grand display but on doing outreach as we go...stopping to talk with people, give out books and literature and hosting Town Hall Meetings in each town we pass through to talk with folks, answer questions and also meet with media.

It’s a grand vision but logistically will be a big challenge. We will need a big supply/logistics team to manage food, sleeping/rest, facilities ect...

Other teams needed:

--Logistics
--Media/PR
--Registration/Deployment of walkers
--Community Relations
--Legal Team
--Internet team (web site, blogging, daily YouTubes)
--Fundraising

No doubt there is more. This will be a huge project and will require the true support of our Ron Paul/Freedom community. That will include financially. It will take money to make this happen.

I am personally visioning something that is a watershed event, much as the Gandhi and MLK walks were at their respective times and places. I hope you will share that vision, or at least vision something compatible with it. Lots of people are starting to take this general idea and are working off of it in various ways, and that’s great. Let’s see a great big outburst of that Ron Paul Revolution creativity, cooperation and good will.

If you are planning on walking, please make a YouTube asap telling people why you will be walking for freedom, a little bit about yourself and your thoughts about the Walk. Be sure to send us the like asap!

LET’S MAKE HISTORY!

We've got to raise some serious cash for deposits. We have some creative ways of funding this thing, but still need to push for everything we can get. We ran into a snag with our first PAC and that threw a lot of aspects off. For now the money is going to Steve's account. Revolution March Foundation is supportive and asked for a few days rest before I start bugging them:D. I hope we end up running it through them. There is another PAC in MASS that Jim has been talking to.

The bottom line on the funding targets is to house and support 100 activists for a month. It actually is pretty cheap. The walkers will be raising their own share, the push is for deposits.

What we are going to be doing will be valuable, the more help we get the better. We want to seriously spread the messege and everyone we talk to recognizes the potential.

Please donate if you can, you'll be sponsoring a walker

Thanks

Everyone. I know we are all tapped from all the various money bombs, etc. But if you can spare just a little, this project is very worthwhile. We need to spread the word about the Campaign for Liberty. And this is a great way to do that. Their goal is to sign up 10,000 more for this movement by September.

Great American Walk for Freedom Traverses Wisconsin
Effort Promotes Constitutional Government

On August 11, 2008, a group of “latter day Paul Reveres” will step forward and take a “Message of Freedom” directly to the people of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Displaying undaunted commitment to the restoration of Constitutional government in America, these self-described “patriots of the 2nd American Revolution” will traverse 280 miles in 21 days to arrive in Minneapolis for Congressman Ron Paul’s “Rally for the Republic” on September 2nd.

The group feels that the fundamental principles of the Constitution are no longer being followed in America today. “We have lost our way. We have a government of men, not a government of law. We’re talking about the restoration of Constitutional government and the rule of law”, says John Zwengel, one of the group’s organizers and a computer graphics artist from rural Illinois.

Educate and Organize
The organizers are quick to point out that The Great American Walk for Freedom is not a protest or a demonstration. “This is a campaign of outreach, education and organization”, says Los Angeles resident Steven Vincent. “In each town we pass through, with every American we meet, at every farmhouse and every crossroads, we will educate the people about the condition of the country and the solution to its troubles: the principles of Liberty and the Constitution. “

A fleet of rented RV’s will serve as mobile dormitories, mess halls, bathrooms and supply vehicles. The RV’s will be decorated to advertise their message as they travel and will serve as housing in Minneapolis as well.

Taking the “Case for Freedom” to the People
The group plans on distributing thousands of copies of the U.S. Constitution and “USA Tomorrow” newspapers and will hold Town Hall Meetings in some 24 locations along the route. “We will cut a swath across two States and leave a trail of Freedom in our path” says Michael Maresco, who hails from Hawaii. “Samuel Adams spoke of “setting brushfires of Liberty in the minds of men. That’s what we aim to do.”

At these meetings the group will give a presentation entitled: “The Case for Freedom: The Constitution is the Way Forward for America”. Jim Azzola, an online bookseller from New Hampshire said, “We will also encourage dialogue about the Constitutional issues raised by the presentation. We intend to spark thought and discussion giving voice to the People on the most pressing matters facing the nation today.”

Vincent feels that “Americans are ready to hear the message of Freedom” and notes that “the response from the people of Wisconsin has been tremendous. We have Town Hall Meetings scheduled at High Schools, Public Libraries, American Legion Posts and Churches. The responsive participation we are receiving is exemplified by the leader of a Boy Scouts troop who, upon learning of the upcoming meeting, offered to distribute flyers to all the parents and scouts at their next gathering. He also volunteered to place the flyer on public bulletin boards around town and place an ad in the town newspaper.”

The organizers say that several returning Iraq War veterans will be joining their Walk for Freedom and that Wisconsin veterans organizations have been among the most interested in hearing their message. Harry, an 81 year old WWII and Korean War veteran from rural Illinois, is contacting VFW and American Legion Posts about the Great American Walk for Freedom. Harry feels that something has gone wrong with the country and feels compelled to act. “I can’t believe what this country is becoming. It’s sure not what I went to fight for”.

We The People
The organizers emphasize that it is a non-partisan effort. The Freedom Walkers are an odd assortment of Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Independents and others whose basic agreement is that the Founding Fathers gave America a governing rule book to follow and that it is no longer being followed. “I always say, if you don’t have rules, then you’re going have rulers.” says Steven Vincent. “Someone is going to decide. If it’s not the unbiased law, then it’s going to be men with a self interested agenda”.

The Great American Walk for Freedom will have a big “Kick Off” from Lambeau Field in Green Bay on Monday, August 11th at the Packers home opening game. Their first stop from there will be Pulaski, Wisconsin.

To find the complete schedule of stops and Town Hall meetings, visit http://www.Walk4Freedom.com. To participate in the Walk for Freedom, set up a Town Hall Meeting, make a donation or otherwise support this effort, contact: freedommessage@sbcglobal.net or leave a message at 414-256-1307.
