This is a "must read" book, that really IS a must read in the sense that you will never understand how we can truly be free from tyranny without understanding the concepts that it describes.

The High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space

Its relevance to the liberty movement may not be immediately obvious, but once the reader understands the profound significance of what this visionary scientist is describing, you will never again see this world, or human potential, in the same mundane terms.

If you don't have time to read the book right now, at least read the introductory article found on the home page of the Space Stiudies Institute.

The World’s Energy Future [Still] Belongs in Space by Dr. Gerard K. O’Neillhttp://ssi.org/ (http://ssi.org/)

Our constitution and nation were born out of the perfect storm of a new frontier populated by pioneers, nearly unlimited natural resources, "free" land for the taking, and enough distance from the oppressive governments of Europe to give our nascent Republic a chance of survival.

It is this type of frontier that is the natural incubator and ultimate refuge for human liberty.

It is the technological path to just such a modern frontier, the "High Frontier", that Gerard O'Neill has shown us in his book.

In many ways I consider Dr. O'Neill to be the "Ron Paul" of scientists.
Once understood, his road map for the extension of human civilization into outer space is incredibly intuitive; in the "Why didn't I think of that!" manner of all truly elegant solutions.
However, in spite of the fact that The High Frontier was written in the mid-1970's, and advances in technology have only made his vision even more attainable today, his ideas are relentlessly ignored by "the establishment".

Why? A fact that is never explained (and possibly not fully appreciated by the author himself) was that the civilization envisioned by Dr. O'Neill would not only be "unkillable" but also inherently free,.... forever.

I do not believe that this is a fact lost on the would be dictators of the "New World Order". There are too many ways in which The High Frontier scuttles their plans, both in the near and long term.

For example, a source of unlimited, "free", safe, and clean energy beyond their ability to monopolize (from solar power satellites) would be disastrous for their sinister agenda.

That is only one aspect of the High Frontier that frightens Them, and should serve as an inspiration for every lover of liberty!

The economics of scarcity, global warming, pollution, ecological destruction, overpopulation, starvation, pandemics, religious and racial intolerance, global terrorism are all tools or potential tools in the hands of the global fascists.

The answer to these and many other problems are found in an industrial civilization in outer space. If this seems too "pie in the sky" or long term to be relevant to our problems today, then I can only say that you should consider the possibility that we have all been subjected to a careful program of selective attention and propaganda to create that impression in all "educated" voters.

Everyone acknowledges that the future of mankind lies in the very large universe beyond the little blue marble, Earth. I would just like to introduce you to the idea that the future is a lot closer than you think, and a whole lot closer than They want you to know!

I would like to say, I thought of this some time ago, and posted on it. (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=129736&highlight=Free+Planet)

Wonderful!
Then you will LOVE this book!

It really does describe a technologically feasible and economically practical way of accomplishing what you were discussing.

It also shows how NASA has been an obstacle to this road path, another example of the unintended consequences of a federal program killing what it is supposed to be helping. Or was it "unintended"?
In this case, I think perhaps not.

In the bureaucratic format, satellite power has no natural home and no built-in constituency. NASA, now a timid, fearful NASA made up of aging pre-retirees rather than the young tigers who made Apollo work in just eight years, would be frightened out of its skin by a tough, make-it-work assignment with a tight budget and a tighter time scale. And NASA’s charter doesn’t cover energy. The DOE? Its charter doesn’t include space. The NSF? Satellite power isn’t science, it’s engineering.
That’s why research support toward satellite power has been left largely to the Space Studies Institute, a small foundation supported by thousands of private citizens -much as the organizations of the environmental movement are supported. Environmentally concerned citizens and groups, and SSI, should be talking. Their concerns are the same and their goals are the same. Since the governmental-scientific establishment in the United States is making no useful move toward a serious review of satellite power as a practical alternative, it may well be that concerned citizens are the only force that can bring about the necessary action. We as citizens have often succeeded in “Stop!” actions. Let us review, carefully and with open minds, whether SPS is something that we may want to “Start!” (http://ssi.org/?page_id=54)

Bump until someone actually reads this article,

The World’s Energy Future [Still] Belongs in Space by Dr. Gerard K. O’Neill (http://ssi.org/)

and then you can tell me it isn't relevant.:)
