With way the hierarchy works in congressional leadership positions if you are the minority leader and the balance of power changes in congress you become the majority leader.
Many many leaders of the republican members of congress will be tossed after this falls defeat and we need RP to step forward and take more leadership roles. If RP is in leadership positions he could be poised to take powerfull chairmenships in 2010. There will be a backlash against the democrats like in '92 especially if the democrats have a filibuster proof senate and they can pass anything their hearts desire. The last thing we want is the same neocons reassuming leadership if that happens.
This is kind of like a smart invester buying houses when the the market is in a bust cycle and prices are cheap. When the market comes back he will be riding high.

Major problem with your premise

Chairmanships of committees are based on seniority, and seniority alone. You become the chair of a committee when you are the longest serving member of that committee or sub-committee. They DO NOT deviate from this unless the potential chairman has seriously fucked up or been involved in some type of big scandal.

There are going to be a lot of republicans thinking the leaders have seriously fucked up by leading the party into the loss of both houses of congress, the presidency, many state houses, lost the financial support of the rank and file of the party and drove many out of the party. Heads will roll.
