Odd little article. Some folks in the know correct me, but why is it I was asked about being exposed to ddt when I was pregnant with my first couple of children in the 90's? They don't ask anymore. Seems that ddt no longer poses a threat for birth defects, that's interesting. Which big lobbyist swung that deal with the government??

I've never been aware of DDT causing birth defects, but it does severely affect the bird population. That's why geese and bald eagles were never seen in the wild when I was a kid.
DDT isn't banned worldwide. The article is wrong about that, in the least. But we do insist that countries we give aid to not use it.

I recall very distinctly being asked about exposure and then worrying about them being affected. I was exposed as a child during Florida's major fly over campaign to eradicate the mosquitos. I asked the nurse when she questioned me as to exposure and she said exposure as a child could cause birth defects. It found that astonishing that it was that destructive, which is why it stuck with me.
I was curious as to anyone else who had been asked this question , or whether I was an anomally because I answered yes (and why) during the time when ddt was a taboo toxin, which appears not to be the case anymore. I just figured they had my case file and I had proven pregnancies which were normal and that was why they stopped asking, not that ddt was an acceptable poison which does not affect fertility/births.
This article makes it seem that ddt is the best thing since sliced bread. I also was startled when I saw the upswing of its use again. Did not know that it was bad for the bird population too, learned something new. Like I said weird article. Does anyone do research anymore beforre they throw information out there as truth??AACK!!

They probably don't ask anymore because it has been so long since it was banned.
That's just a thought, I don't have any information to back that up.

I wonder how many third world children died because food prices shot up when DDT was banned...

Not to mention the millions more who died from encephalitis, West Nile virus, malaria, and yellow fever (all mosquito-borne diseases) because the most effective mosquito control compound in the public health arsenal was banned.
But hey, if a few more vultures make it through fledglinghood, it was all worth it.

We were brainwashed on the dangers of it by Racheal Carson's, Silent Spring. book.

DDT is a white crystalline solid with no apparent odour or taste. It is a man-made organochlorine consisting of a mixture of DichloroDiphenylTrichloroethane isomers. It is made by a reaction between chlorine gas and the double benzene ring structure under optimal temperature and pressure conditions. When the two compounds are reacted, DDT is formed easily because of the high reactivity of chlorine gas. DDE and DDD are also made in the same reaction and often contaminate DDT, but are also both very toxic to living organisms.
Yeah...sounds completely harmless...

Wait, no-no there's more...
"DDT is a hormone disrupter that mimics estrogen and binds to a cell's estrogen receptors, thus stimulating the receptors and causing an imbalance in the normal levels and effects. It causes impaired reproduction in many species of fish and other aquatic animals. DDT bioaccumulates in the fatty tissue of fish and other animals.
DDT can also affect the nervous system by altering action potentials through changes in the actions of the sodium channels. It causes them to close very slowly and prolong each action potential sent in the nerve. This causes excitation, spasms, and paralysis."
Geesh so it mimics estrogen and we should not worry about exposure why?? Maybe the market should find a non-toxic method of killing bugs instead of what is fast and cheap all the time....This stuff sounds vile...

How many people died from exposure to DDT?
How many people died due to widespread food shortages and disease after it was banned?

So it is fine to flood the earth with a substance that simulates estrogen (can't see how that could be harmful to humans), kills fish and birds(so upending the food chain is not going to adversly affect humans either). It is formed from chlorine gas with two contaminates which are known toxins to living organisms. Answering a question with a snarky bait avoids the fact that you have yet to say why something formed from chlorine gas which mimics estrogen does not seem like an unhealthy substance with which to be flooding the earth.
I grew up during the flyovers in Florida, they coat everything with this substance. You are inhaling this and touching things coated with this substance. If we utillized this worldwide and killed off all the fish due to its high toxicity to fish, and killed of all the birds which are adversely affected how much widespread food shortage do you think there would be?
It also appears that from some reports there was a build up of resistance by the same bugs they were targeting after usage of ddt. Far from being the miracle solution, it was (and is) another short term solution with far reaching effects which was only cheap and effective for your short term numbers. Burning down the house to get rid of the fleas is usually a bad idea, seems like ddt is too.
