Paulville? Count Ron Paul out

May 12, 2008

The founders of Paulville recently announced the purchase of the first 50 acres in West Texas on which they plan to build one of their “gated communities containing 100 percent Ron Paul supporters and or people that live by the ideals of freedom and liberty.”

One man who won’t be moving there anytime soon: Ron Paul.

“I don’t think that’s the solution,” says the still-running Republican presidential candidate. “You want to spread out and be as pervasive as possible.”

The driving idea behind Paulville -- that likeminded lovers of liberty should band together -- is not a new one. In 2003, thousands of libertarians vowed to move to New Hampshire as part of the Free State Project. Paul was no more sanguine on that effort, saying that population spillover from Massachusetts had overwhelmed it.

“They outnumbered us, the liberals leaving Massachusetts,” he says. "They wanted to pay less taxes, but then again, they wanted more government and they outnumbered the ones who wanted less government.”

Paulville, meanwhile, is much less likely than New Hampshire to attract Massachusetts liberals. But it does boast some green possibilities that a Northeast liberal might like. Snuggled deep into West Texas, the plot, according to Paulville.org, was chosen for its high amount of sunshine -- the better to power solar panels and keep off the grid.

The community is structured as a co-op; freedom-loving denizens can purchase plots as small as one acre and are not required to use the co-op’s water or energy supply.

But dropping out and creating an isolated community isn’t the answer, says Paul, a congressman from Texas. “You don’t want the ideas to be centered in one place,” he says. “But it shows how desperate people are for freedom.”

Consistent with his beliefs in liberty, however, he doesn’t outright oppose Paulville. “I don’t see that as a solution, but it can’t hurt anything either,” he says.

Paul’s non-endorsement of Paulville comes at what seems to be a perilous time for the infant community. On Monday, just days after the announcement of the land purchase, the Web site Paulville.org went out of existence. No contact information had been on the site when it was live; phone calls and e-mails to the site administrator over the last several days have gone unreturned.

Let I remind you... in a Libertarian society, non-coercive socialism/communism is allowed. But in a socialistic/communist society, libertarianism is not. Thanks curlz.

“But it shows how desperate people are for freedom.”

“I don’t see that as a solution, but it can’t hurt anything either,”

just wanted to point those out..

he isn't completely against it, he just thinks we would be more effective living in regular cities.. but with the impending economic crisis, many paul supporters living in cities or towns may not survive, whereas maybe the Paulvilles will be prosperous.

this isn't just about him, this is about freedom and survival.

No...he IS against it. He just isn't stupid enough to publicly blast his supporters, no matter HOW far out there they are. But rest assured he is very much against it.

How do I know? Because anyone with an IQ over 80 can easily see how ridiculous this idea is. And I assume that Ron Paul's IQ is over 80.

Not really a shock, it segregates us and has zero to do with taking back the country at all. It really is a "lets all hide over here" since we can't change anything.

Change your local government if you want real change locally.

I just hope people don't give up on the Free State Project in New Hampshire so quickly, good things could happen there. Several hundred very devoted people have moved already, hundreds more will be moving soon, and it was a pretty free state to begin with, definitely in the Top 5, which is amazing when you consider the states that surround it.

Although I'm not planning to move to Paulville, I don't understand the anger toward it that I see here.

I can see a real advantage to having like-minded, liberty-loving neighbors. In case TSHTF, it would be really nice to have a "Galt's Gulch" to settle into while we await the recovery. Would you be safer and more likely to survive there than in typical suburbia surrounded by the clueless?

Not to be incredibly cold but... if SHTF you don't necessarily want a whole bunch of neighbors or to live in a widely-advertised location, especially near others (city just to the east) whose water, power, and other "luxuries" will be gone.

Also it's not really off the grid. It's a subdivision. It's a bunch of houses. I originally said several times I would support Paulville via tourism, but there are no hotels, businesses, restaurants, or anything else in the works. It's a "gated community" (but there will be no fences or gates) and if you talk to the people planning on moving there, they aren't "like-minded" at all. They don't even get along in a chatroom :(

This idea has so many problems, I don't know where to begin. I can just see some a$$hole McCain supporter calling the cops claiming to be a teen-aged girl who has been sexually abused by a Paulite and the next thing you know, stormtroopers are kicking down the doors... We need not be isolationists, but infiltrators, spreading the Freedom message to our cluless neighbors. This is how we will make our neighborhoods "Little Paulville's". Have you talked to your neighbors today?

paulville.org is gone from the web. Did people lose their money? Did people actually buy anything?

let it not be said that Ron Paul supporters aren't creative. haha

I'm just waiting for the thread that suggests building a man-made Paulville island (like in Dubai) and launching the Ron Paul mentos/diet coke rocket from it. ;)

Everyone has their own role to play. Not everyone wants to be a political activist.
Sometimes simply withdrawing and being sends a more powerful message than in-your-face politicking.
If their community is successful, peaceful, and happy we will all learn from it and apply what we can.
