View Full Version : MEETUP Folks- Who is Tim Shaw?

wd4freedom

I noticed a person by the name of Tim Shaw signed into my local meetup with no profile. Then checked to learn that he was a member of about every RP meetup across the country. He is from Fairfield Iowa.

Is this person an RP supporter? I removed him from our meetup. I want to be open and invite all who are interested, but I do believe that as we get closer to convention, others are gathering intel by joining RP meetups.

Anyone else have info?

If he is with national campaign, I have no problem. But until he gives me a better reason for joining all these meetups, then he will stay out of our local in NM.

I have removed him from our meetup too. He contributed to Mitt Romney, at least twice, and decent sized sums. He's not a Ron Paul supporter.

Intel? Insurgents? Infiltrate? All words I hear being thrown around by the press and members often. I guess I did unwittingly join a terrorist organization  ;)

Oh I totally agree. You need to figure out someone or something that's somewhat questionable, people here can sniff it out like bloodhounds in no time.

As Rev9 would call them, the "Sheepdogs" of the Revolution.

This is really sad.... and when you think that these folks portray themselves as honest , truthful, fightin' for the "common man", etc. and then they pull these underhanded tactics to make a buck - only to promote themselves and their quest for power.

I do a bit of private detective work in my spare time. The internet has sh*t scary amounts of accessible data, you just need to know how to find it.

He's been kicked out of our local Meetup with the following message to him:

You should be ashamed of yourself, posing as a Ron Paul supporter when you in fact support a Neoconservative viewpoint. Misrepresenting yourself makes you a liar and Ron Paul folks don't trust liars. I hope that at some point you will come around to understanding and promoting individual liberty and personal responsibility, but until then you will not belong to my local Ron Paul meetup. I highly suggest you read Dr. Paul's book, "The Revolution: A Manifesto" so you might truly understand what real Republicans are fighting for.

it's bad to say this, but i'd say any new member joining within the last month and a half should be suspect. there's no telling how many others like this tim have joined meetups. maybe for the more active groups, all important mailings should be moved to a private email address list.

man, it looks random to me.

Do you have a link to his profile?....I wonder when he started joining these Meetups. He is a member of the CNN/Youtube Debate group. I wonder if he joined that group around the time of that debate or if he joined it recently.

PLEASE do me a favor. When you contact the meetup to tell them about this guy, PLEASE tell them to contact me about the Freedom Tour. Why? Because we've realized that Meetup has blocked most of our emails to the meetup organizers. Really appreciate the help.

Tell them to email meetups@freedomtour08.com

I checked the TOS and this is all I could find:

4.2 Grounds for Removal, Sanction and/or Suspension. Notwithstanding any other provision of this Agreement, the following types of actions are cause for immediate repeal and/or suspension of your account:
(a) The use of our Platform to (including, without limitation, eligibility requirements):
(i) harm or intimidate another person in any way, including restricting or inhibiting any other user from using our Platform;
(ii) impersonate any person (including Meetup staff and other members), or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with any person, through the use of similar email addresses, nicknames, or creation of false account(s) or any other method or device;
(iii) disguise the origin of any Public Information that is transmitted to any third party;
(iv) "stalk" or otherwise harass another;
(v) advertise merchandise, auctions, services or commercial websites, including offers to trade or charitable solicitations unrelated to the topic or spirit of the Meetup Group.; or
(vi) collect or store personal data about other users;

There doesn't seem to be any rules about a limit on how many groups you can be a member of. Now if he is collecting personal data and sharing with a third party...that's another story. But probably very hard to prove.

He is running again for city councilman.

Well, I just literally send out a shoutout to every single meetup organizer that
Tim (http://ronpaul.meetup.com/898/members/7118806/) is a member of. - Someone maybe do the same for the Tim Shaw acct?

Its worth questioning. If he's never been to the meetup, which he hasn't. (Unless he can teleport) He's of no value. And should be discarded regardless. If he was there to pass on information to meetups etc. Plausible and fine.. but he's done and will never do, such a thing.

Notifying the meetup org leaders, at least brings it to their attention - and they can decide for themselves. :)

Hello Folks,
I say that we should be thankful that someone is taking an interest in the Ron Paul Revolution. If Tim Shaw is in the pay of Mitt Romney (or John McCain), how better to get a straight shot of Austrian economics into the Romney (or McCain) organization?
I know Ben Stein could use a refresher course in Austrian economics.
I plan to get a hold of Mr. Shaw and welcome him to the party.

I think calling a duck a duck is pretty reasonable. If he doesn't want to be called a neocon shill and a liar perhaps he shouldn't engage in activities that invite people to do so. As for your plan to "bring him into the movement", good luck. This guy spent a lot of time infiltrating our groups. What is the count now, over 200 meetups he's joined?

With 2 posts, defending a guy who is apparently trying to collect information about our plans doesn't really help your credibility either.

Not a single person has sent ANYTHING, nor done anything of the sort. And I doubt will. OH, hang on - how could you possibly know that has happened? Wouldn't the only way to know, is if YOU ARE THE PERSON WHOSE RECEIVED IT? (Thane Eichenauer - please explain how it could be otherwise.. someone? Logic & reason dictates this, does it not?) There has been nothing but positive comments on both his accounts profiles. Thanking him for joining their meetup.

I've personally got a lot of thank you's, just in the last few hours from meetup organizers, who have now removed him. Thanking me for the heads up.

Okay, folks, before you start scanning the skies for black helicopters, you will note that a bunch of people have been signing up for huge numbers of Ron Paul meetups, for many months now.

I suspect most of them did it just to "pump up" the meetup group numbers.

Yep, fair enough. Which is why each individual and their actions needs to be considered. BUt this guy hasn't been to even ONE meetup. If he wanted to help, he would have.

A guy whose donated to Romney, and that has gotten well wishes from John McCain and seems v. active for the GOP - ain't no Ron Paul supporter by a long stretch of the imagintation. And if he's converted. Let him state so. Better yet, let his actions speak. If anything, all he will have to do is rejoin the meetup.....

There is a Tim Shaw on the voter list in Fairfield Iowa, and his Meetup Profile says he's from Fairfield, so I don't think this is the same guy as the one running for office in CA. We got 79% of the caucus vote for Ron Paul in our precinct - maybe the largest in the county? Also we were the only county to win in Iowa for Ron Paul and got the highest turnout for our local GOP that they have ever seen. So people here tend to think big, and I would not assume anything nefarious about Tim Shaw until you have evidence. If he wanted to hide his memberships in Meetup it is easy to do under the account profile.

There's also a Tim Shaw who's a comedian and his tour called the First Amendment something or other.

Look, MeetUp only shows a few groups to which a person belongs, but it looks like "Tim Shaw" signed up for EVERYTHING. That's not the act of an overzealous fan. That's the act of someone compiling information. It takes a few minutes to register for a group, and we have like 2000 groups, no? So that's over a 130 hours worth of registration time alone! Nobody did this by hand. They wrote an app or something and added themselves to all Ron Paul MeetUp groups.

Maybe the person who did it is a loser/freak, but the simplest answer is that someone did it to either cause trouble or get dirt.

To whom at MeetUp can we report this suspicious behavior?

A Tim Shaw...
Fact: someone named Tim Shaw, has donated to Romney's campaign.
Fact: a Tim Shaw whose in pictures with Romney smiling.
Fact: a Tim Shaw who is shaking the hand of John McCain, signed with Best Wishes.
Fact: a Tim Shaw joins every meetup group he possibly can of Congressman Ron Paul.
Fact: another Tim joins every meetup group he possibly can of Congressman Ron Paul. (Different ones to the other account)

Yea, hey it may be the wrong guy and its probably just a coincidence...
The worst that happens: the meetup organizers make a decision of what they know about him. Since they don't know shit about him, because he's never attended a local meetup - he gets kicked.

On the first page for the A.D.D members:

Destination ImagiNation

Our students won eight state championship awards, beating the previous School record of seven championships, set in 2005. Two of the teams won additional honors at State: a DaVinci Award for creative risk taking and a Renaissance Award for outstanding design, engineering, execution, and performance.

The eight teams included 42 students who advanced to the Global Finals competition in Knoxville, Tennessee. Over 8,000 students on 991 teams from nearly 50 states and 13 foreign countries took part in the international competition.

Our senior boys’ team won first place at Global Finals. The world championship team of Ace Boothby, Noah Caplan, Donnie Chell, Jake Gratzon, Tim Shaw, Owen Stowe and Newlin Wilkins also won a Renaissance Award in Knoxville.

So you think it makes more sense to assume that the individual is lying about their location while ignoring the fact that there are 3 Tim Shaw's actually living in that area. Instead you assume an elected official from another state is attempting to gather information on us. That doesn't make any sense at all. Especially when you consider the simplicity of this. If there is a group collecting info on us they would not be foolish enough to make it so blatantly obvious, they'd have a few people join their local groups (Which has actually happened and been confirmed).
You must first disprove that any of those 3 are not the person we're referring to.

You're jumping to some serious conclusions here that have no base whatsoever.

It's funny. You talk about them not being foolish enough to... and yet you miss the obvious, that choosing an address with several people of that name will lead people to believe it is one of them instead. It's not rocket science.

I am not convinced either way, but I certainly lean towards it being the Tim Shaw I found. MOTIVE is the FIRST thing you go looking for.

No, the person in question has not logged on to the meetup since they joined on May 1st. I've sent them messages but who knows if they will respond once they've logged on. My point is this, it's much more reasonable to assume the person who did this is actually the 19 prankster from Iowa(have you seen his friends page?) as opposed to the 30 something career politician from La Habra. Hell, it might even be one of the other 2 guys with that name from the same city.

Jumping to conclusions is not helpful in these matters.

No, as I've stated repeatedly, I have no idea who this person is but it seems unlikely that it's council member from La Habra. It seems much more likely that it's one of the 3 people named Tim Shaw who are actually from Fairfield Iowa.

I was, just wanted you to spell it out for everyone..

So what exactly is the self-interest of the other potential Tim Shaws...?
Besides the most compelling and obvious explanation.. that its the dude who belongs to the McCain & Romney camp... you don't think the GOP has been snooping out Ron Paul supporters plans.... argh, LOL.

What self-interest is there for the other Tim Shaw's? In all likelyhood the 19 yr old kid you mentioned is statistically more likely to be gunning for Obama.. What potential purpose or goal is there, in joining every single Ron Paul meetup possible?

Basically all the above is moot... irrelevent in the descision making process of what to do with him.

- Is he a local member? Has he actually attended a meetup?
- Has he contributed in anyway shape or form to the meetup?
- Is there any likely-hood he will in the future?

- No, No, No. = Boot. :)

Yes, it's not relevant at all. I have booted him from my meetup and contacted quite a few other meetups to let them know. The only meetup that is aware of this situation and still hasn't booted him is the Fairfield group. He may actually be one of us, let him prove himself there before we start assuming he's a GOP plant.

I have a GOP plant in my meetup, and he's damned obvious, supports McCan't openly and I leave him there for the disinfo I can give him.

The big question is simply: Is he one of us?

Who knows but based on the performance of the Fairfield group I trust them to find out.

Our guys are better than the CIA, and they work on virtually no budget.

Our guys identified someone in the wrong state, who happens to have the same name and is involved with GOP politics.

And of course it couldn't have been the other Tim Shaws in the donor lists - like the Democratic Pastor or The manager of a recycling center - who also live in the wrong state.

He tried joining 2 of my groups and left the following profile:

"I am working for a non-profit organization that wants to provide constitution education to Americans. We hope to help keep the Ron Paul revolution alive. I would like to give some information to your members. We do not spam or ask for donations."

his location is listed as: Fairfield, IA

Maybe it's this one:

Timothy S & Marilyn S Shaw

home

507 Fairview Ave

Muscatine, IA 52761-4933
(563) 263-0143

http://www.whitepages.com/search/FindPerson?firstname=Tim&name=Shaw&city_zip=Muscatine&state_id=IA

And this page lists 25 entries, mostly for 2 Tim Shaw's that live in IA, and it looks like they move a lot - and one is 28/29 and the other 40 - but there are:
Tim Shaw
Tim J Shaw
Tim M Shaw
Timothy Shaw
Timothy J Shaw
Timothy L Shaw
Timothy M Shaw
Timothy P Shaw
and
Timothy Perry Shaw
(Probably 4 Tim Shaws here, and I bet at least some are related...)

and that's only the ones in the Internet White pages! - If someone has access to commercial databases, and cal look up unlisted numbers, you would probably find about 50 Tim Shaws in Iowa.

Better than the CIA my ass! - that's the kind of sloppy "Intelligence" that got us into the Iraq war.

But yeah - there is still the point that he is joining all these Ron Paul groups and what the hell is he up to as well as who is he?

He is attempting to join my group under the name "Tim".

Here is his message. ""I am working for a non-profit organization that wants to provide constitution education to Americans. We hope to help keep the Ron Paul revolution alive. I would like to give some information to your members. We do not spam or ask for donations."

My reply to him "Its not our policy to allow membership to our group unless you
can make our meetups. I will pass along any info you have. Do you have a web page?"

As I run a closed meetup just for this reason. Someone is a member of 50 or so meetups can cause a great deal of trouble. Spreading rumors, false info. No thanks, our emails will not go to the John MC Cain campaign!!

Meetups are intended to be "Local" gatherings. If you cant make our meetups, you don't need to be a member!!!

Looks like others caught the "Tossing darts for a guilty looking Tim Shaw" before I did, as I didn't read all 9 pages of this thread before posting.

One thing is obvious, and that is that he's joining under a number of Meetup Account names. I'm guessing that Meetup cuts you off on eithor the total number of Meetups you can join with one account or the total number per month. So it's probably a Meetup Limitation and not an attempt at deceit.

Meetups with open admission can expect spam as soon as he finishes his group joining spasms...

We have between 1,450 and 1,500, depending on which count you believe. We are loosing 80 a month.

People have done mass joining projects, one out of this forum - they got help but did most of it themselves. It took them over a week and that was when we had half the Meetups. It was to promote a RP project.

He's stated he wants to post some message. and he's mostly getting into the open join groups, and getting booted from the private ones. If he was just here to monitor he'd do something like: Google: KEYWORD site:ronpaul.meetup.com/####/messages/ and some additional syntax for date ranges.

but he probably doesn't know that, and it doesn't work for private groups, which he's mostly not getting into anyway.

OTOH: google does put some limitations on how many queries you can do a day and I don't think they collect all of our traffic, but searching a site should trigger the spider to scan it more throughly.

There are also freeware spiders out there that will do this, as any open group is open read for our mail spools.

As I recall, Meetup also offers some RSS features, so he may be trying to get traffic mailed to him for data mining, but really - he's probably wanting to spam his message to us - whatever that is.

As he claims to be from a "conservative group" has anyone tried contacting JBS or tax protest groups in IA to inquire about him?

What ever he's up to, he's not being very smart about how he's going about it.

If you are an organizer, you can post about it on Meetups organizer forum.

OK, after finally reading this whole thread, here are the logical conclusions
that I've come to...

At first I thought his welcome message was suspicious but on second
thought, why would an infiltrate say that he wants to promote a non-profit
and won't spam and ask for money? If it was an infiltrate, then he more than
likely would stay far, far away from mentioning anything about 'not sending
spam' and 'not asking for money'.

The more I think about it, the more I see that this 'Tim Shaw' is probably
just signing up for all the meetups so that he can send emails to promote
whatever non-profit business it is. It may very well be a 'for profit'.

Either way, see if we can find out the non-profit.

...How about just sending him an email asking him why he signed up
to all of the meetups? To simple maybe? (or send it when deleting him)

Hunter

p.s. Tim Shaw is a very common name. So maybe none of these 3 Tims are the right one!

p.p.s. What was the very first meetup that he signed up for? That may shed some light
on where he's from.

He's 16, and 40 and around 55
He's an artist - does stained glass and sculpture (some of it obscene)
He lives in England
He's a caucasion, but sometimes he's black.
He's bald, has a crew cut, long hair, and black, brown and red hair
He plays professional football
he's a musician
He's a CEO
etc.

Damb, this guy gets around!

I wonder if his "conservative group" has a Meetup/website/name of it's own.

"I am working for a non-profit organization that wants to provide constitution education to Americans. We hope to help keep the Ron Paul revolution alive. I would like to give some information to your members. We do not spam or ask for donations."

I am working for a non-profit organization, Restoring the Heart of America, whose mission is to provide Constitution Education to Americans. We will be providing online and live seminars to teach this education to mass numbers of people, in hopes to keep the Ron Paul Revolution alive so that Dr. Paul (or similarly-minded candidate) will have more success in 2012 and so that in 2010 we can elect congressmen and senators that support the vision and fundamentals of the Constitution.

I would like to join your Meetup group so that I am able to send an e-mail informing the members about our organization's services.

We will NOT be asking for donations of ANY kind and will NOT be spamming your group. We are Ron Paul supporters and are trying to continue the momentum he has created.
Sincerely,
Timothy Shaw

LoL. An email sent to an Atlanta meetup organizer, who queried. Think I stipulated this early on. Question though is whats the non-profit organization?.... and wouldn't he have actually mentioned the organization..? I mean, paranoia has a slippery slope, hahah. But these are all valid questions. And if we follow the valid and legitimate answers - we can get to the bottom of this and the truth. :) So this process has been rather needed regardless.

I found nothing about "Restoring the Heart of America". I don't have a premium account so I could only search by name, keyword, city, or state....but I found nothing.

Note: If a non-profit makes less than $25,000 I don't think they have to file a tax return...but they should still be registered somewhere as a non-profit, right?

Pretty good detective work! The endorsements on the cover of this book (published in 2002) include this one from Ron Paul "A well articulated and very positive description of what will happen when we return to the fundamental and eternally valid principles upon which this country was founded".

It's written by Fairfield's Clyde Cleveland and Ed Noyes who are among our strongest Ron Paul supporters and helped us win the only county in Iowa for Ron Paul this year. In my precinct we won with a staggering 79%.

I'm the organizer for the Fairfield Ron Paul Meetup and I don't know Tim Shaw but know Clyde and Ed well and I can assure you their project relating to their book ReStoring the Heart of America has the very best of intentions for all in the Ron Paul Revolution. There is no evidence that the Tim Shaw you're referring to is the Tim Shaw from all our meetups. I have removed him from mine and anyone who is concerned should feel free to do the same. However, the meetup organizer from Fairfield is aware of this (see above) and there is a possibility, however small, that this guy is an overzealous RP supporter.

That being said, I would suggest that we leave the guy from La Habra alone until we can prove, without a doubt, that he is the one behind this.

ClockwiseSpark and others, I sent him an e-mail asking about why he signed up and then left Meetup. I was trying to be sincere, because I wanted to know if he wanted information about Ron Paul or if he left for other reasons.

He simply said he wanted Ron to win his house seat, but was more focussed on his local campaign now. I would assume here he has good motives, and just simply didn't want to be a part of meetup.com for his own reasons, perhaps under that same login name. If he is going to be running for a local seat, perhaps he didn't want his meetup.com persona splattered all over the place.

He was an intern for Dana Rohrabacher who I believe is a true patriot. If 10% of Dana rubbed off on this young Republican, then perhaps we have a true patriot in the wings.

Give Tim the benefit of the doubt and if you are near La Habra go and make your acquaintance and support his campaign.

I did not get a denial he was the person. I will most likely not get a confirmation for what would that gain him? I think the matter is closed. The "Tim Shaw" we were concerned about on Meetup.com is no longer a meetup member.

The "Tim Shaw" in La Habra, if the same person or not, is running a local campaign for city council and is a nice upstanding young republican. I think its a win-win situation.
