Convention update: 3:00 p.m.
By Jessica Alaimo

The Maine Republican Party National Committeeman and Committeewoman results are official. Former Senate President Richard Bennett and former committeewoman Jan Staples are the new RNC members.

Cal Thomas spoke earlier. Currently ballots are being tallied for the national delegate slots. State delegates got to pick 12 of about 30 nominees.

Of those, 13 support Ron Paul, according to a list that was handed out. The John McCain campaign handed out a list of 12 “Republican Unity candidates”.

Missing from the nominees for delegates is U.S. Sen. Susan Collins. The state’s two senators are traditionally elected delegates, however this year Collins expects to be campaigning in Maine, Collins’ staff said, so she wanted to let someone else have the slot.

As PolitickerME’s Wally Edge reported, this morning five of the district delegate slots went to McCain supporters, and one went to a Ron Paul supporter.

The party platform was discussed earlier, and most of the amendments proposed were knocked down. More details on this later.

Team McCain managed to completely lock out the Ron Paul delegates, capturing the remaining 12 delegates. McCain's floor managers distributed a flyer with the names of the 12 delegates that they believed would be suitable McCain supporters. The 12 delegates are: (number of votes in parentheses)
Former Governor John McKernan 532
Senator Olympia Snowe 535
Rep. Josh Tardy 551
Senator Carol Weston 555
Congressional candidate Charlie Summers
Senator Kevin Raye 518
Dwayne Bickford508
Elaine Bridge 507
Kathy Watson527
Dawn Gilbert 435
Ann Robinson 538
Jan Staples 516

Oh well, it was only 18 delegates anyway. 1/18 isn't great, good, or OK, but it won't kill anything.

At least we know their names......send them the Manifesto!

We have to understand that we can't win at these conventions by promoting Ron Paul. We can win as conservatives! WE MUST CAMPAIGN AS CONSERVATIVES at these conventions. The Romney types would much rather vote for a conservative republican than a Ron Paul republican. We will get their votes there! Live and learn though. Just beware of this at future conventions and caucuses. When you know all the Ron Paul supporters who will be voting at a convention tell them who to vote for beforehand, then campaign for votes from everybody else as well. You will get votes as long as you're not running around waving a revolution banner!

These people are programmed to be unswayed by logic and reason. Ron Paul videos are useless against them  We must appeal to the conservative roots of the party without mentioning Ron Paul... They're programmed to recoil in horror at that name.

Let's not forget Dr. Paul's best support came out West. Those are the states we should expect to take. Aside from a couple states, don't expect much out East.

Were these delegates that were elected precinct and county delegates first? Or doesn't it work that way there?

If I were Maine, I would look into the consequence of Jan Staples winning both the national committeewoman and 12th at large delegate spot.

One could come away from Rule 29 with a couple of interpretations, among them being
a) the 13th place takes Jan's place
b) Jan gets two votes
c) Jan's alternate will automatically be seated
d) Maine loses one vote
e) probably others as well

RULE NO. 29
Voting

(a) Each delegate to the convention shall be entitled to one (1) vote, which may be cast by an alternate delegate in the absence of the delegate, and an individual holding more than one (1) of the following positions: national committeeman; national committeewoman; or state chairman of any state, shall not be entitled to more than one (1) delegate seat and shall not be entitled to more than one (1) vote.

These guys signed up to go to the state convention by attending the caucuses in Feb. In most districts there weren't elections... if you showed up and wanted to go you were able to go. At least that was my experience. It's a shame that we couldn't round up more people to go to the convention! We were outnumbered there by career politicians and neocons...

They usually don't take office as RNC members until after the election year.

I stand corrected Rule 3. Thanks.

Look at how many prominent names are on that slate as well. Unlike Nevada, Maine's leaders actually showed up at the convention and ran for delegate slots. That was the difference right there.
