In a few recent posts, I've recommended that people check out some alternative food supplements like Milk Thistle, CoQ10, garlic, etc. And I've stated that I've read research on these things without providing more sources than Wikipedia and some various links.

If anyone is interested in some of the high-falutin' research done by the NIH or the National Library of Medicine, I have some access to the full content of these articles. Warning: while some of it is more layman-oriented, a lot of it uses language such as:

The histopathological changes were observed with Masson staining. The results showed that the restoration of the CCl(4)-induced damage of liver fibrosis in the therapeutic group was significantly increased as compared to that in the model group. Moreover, silymarin significantly decreased the elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase in serum, and also reversed the altered expressions of alpha-smooth muscle actin in liver tissue.

So, check out http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?db=pubmed to do a search on anything you're interested in. If there has been some "official" research done on it, you can usually read a summary of it. If there's some study where you'd like to read the entire version, I can usually get the full text if it's not already available there.

Like I said, if there's one that particularly interests you I can get the full text most of the time, but it may take a day or two.

Milk thistle is also good for a not very common condition in pregnancy called cholestasis of pregnancy. Main symptom is INTENSE itching, especially on feet and hands. I used milk thistle to keep it well under control. It can be dangerous if not treated (still birth and brain bleeding in newborns) so if you're planning on having kids just something to keep in mind if someone you care about is up all night with itching that isn't helped by anything. Dandelion root is also touted as equally beneficial.

Thanks for the info on milk thistle. I think I had read once that it could be useful for itching during pregnancy, but had never really thought about that being a serious condition. I just assumed it was treating a symptom of pregnancy that some people experienced. Milk thistle (http://www.seacoastvitamins.com/product_info.php?products_id=3326) is a great supplement, especially for those looking to detox their liver. It has been used for quite some time to treat damage people have done to their livers from drug and alcohol use, but it can be used to detox the liver from everyday toxins as well.

I take milk thistle because I take other medications, and my doctor suggested I start on milk thistle *before* I ever took my first prescription pill. This is why I adore the guy. I also take cinnamon to regulate glucose fluctuations. Cinnamon pills are likewise recommended for diabetics who want to get their sugar levels down.

I think that more doctors should think about prescriptions as a last resort, or at least combining prescriptions with supplements to counteract all those nasty side effects and damages.
