Ron Paul to speak at UC

By KEILA SZPALLER of the Missoulian

Presidential candidate Ron Paul is bound for Missoula, a place where Republicans prefer him over Arizona Sen. John McCain.

The Texas congressman's bid for the GOP presidential nomination looks dead in the water, but he'll appear at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, in the University of Montana's University Center Ballroom for a “freedom rally.” Paul has pressed for a reduced federal government and free markets.

McCain is the presumptive Republican nominee, but one campus leader said a talk from Paul is still a nice rallying point. Allie Harrison, president of UM's College Republicans, said Paul probably wouldn't draw a large crowd elsewhere in Montana, but she expects he will in Missoula.

“He's a good guest speaker. He's a candidate regardless of whether or not we agree with a lot of the things he says,” Harrison said.

Harrison said she will ask club members to volunteer at the rally, which she expects will draw several hundred people. The club co-sponsors his talk.

While Montana Republicans on Super Tuesday threw their support behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Missoula wanted Paul. In Montana's winner-take-all GOP caucus, Paul came in second, and McCain was third.

Is Montana having any upcoming higher level processes for national delegates? I hope this isn't pure publicity and is still a relevant campaign experience. Seems like Ron Paul's time would be best spent in the states that have yet to hold contests.

Dr. Paul will also be talking at our state convention in June, where our delegates will be picked. Paul got a higher percentage here than any other state so far, so we deserve some attention.
