A couple of interesting links on John McCain...probably old news to many people here. Kristol and McCain have been ideologically identical since the 90's.

"McCain began reading the Weekly Standard and
conferring with its editors, particularly Bill
Kristol…When McCain wanted to hire a new legislative
aide, his chief of staff, Mark Salter–himself a former
aide to neoconservative Jeanne Kirkpatrick, consulted
with Kristol, who recommended a young protege named
Daniel McKivergan…Randy Scheunemann, who had drafted
the Iraq Liberation Act and was on the board of
Kristol’s Project for a New American Century, became
McCain’s foreign policy adviser. One person who has
worked closely with Kristol says of Kristol and
McCain, “They are exceptionally, exceptionally close."

Media falsely name McCain 'maverick'
"Members of the mainstream media in this country have
been engaged in a nauseating love affair with Sen.
John McCain ever since his failed presidential
campaign in 2000. ...
However, this, in and of itself, does not a maverick
make. Simply repeating something over and over again
does not mean that it's true.
The media's preferential treatment of McCain is
self-evident and irresponsible. In 2006, MSNBC's Chris
Matthews openly admitted to the media's affinity for
McCain: "The press loves McCain. We're his base." ...
The media-manufactured-myth of McCain as maverick has
been vigorously reinforced during this election
season."
