I just got back from the annual Minnesota tax cut rally on the capital steps. Jason Lewis, talk show host and occasional sub for Rush Limbaugh, was the main speaker, along with various conservative legislators and candidates.

About 4000 people showed up on a snowy, cold April day to protest the continual increasing taxes.

There were quite a few Ron Paul signs, I carried one. I counted a grand total of ZERO John McCain signs.

Only one TV media crew was here. I will report back on how many channels talk about the event. If it had been a welfare rights rally, every TV station in town would have been there, even if only 20 protester had been there.

This event was different than last year when the environmentalists managed to get a permit from their sympathizers in the capital to hold an Earth Day protest one week early. Only a couple of hundred of tree huggers showed up, compared to at least 5000 tax protesters. They must have gotten discouraged this year, and because it was so cold (amidst the rampant global warming), they would have had even fewer of their weakling supporters show up.

This picture is from last year's tax protest, when the environmentalists had their protest in the lower mall. You can see their white tents in the background.

It looks like there were more protesters than last year. :)

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but I think because of better weather last year, more people were there.

If it had been just as warm this year, I think there would have been many more people. It was still an impressive crowd. I overheard a state patrol officer say he thought there were 3500 people there this year. Hard to count that many people in one crowd, so I just made my own estimate.

Here is another view of this year's event. More people showed up after this picture, including at least two busloads.

Sorry if you thought I was being sarcastic. It really looks like more people were there this year rather than last year. I think more people are waking up. :)

Sorry, I forgot to watch the news to see if the protest was mentioned. I hardly ever watch the news anyway.

I did get the Sunday papers. The Minneapolis Star Tribune (the Star and Sickle) had an article on page B4. They said we drew a crowd of about 1000 people (WRONG, see the pictures). Like you would expect from the liberal media, they included snippets of the rally and included their personal political agenda.

Star Tribune:

The Minnesota Tax Cut Coalition held its annual rally at the State Capital on Saturday, drawing a crowd of about 1,000 people demanding that legislators stop "wasteful" spending and allow Minnesotans to keep more of their paychecks.

Notice the quotes around the word "wasteful".

Then the article mentions DFLer Matt Entenza, who wasn't at the rally, who says the protesters have it all wrong. Minnesota isn't one of the highest taxed states. "The cost of a no-tax system is horrible schools, horrible health care, horrible roads", he said.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press did slightly better. On page 3B the article started with:

John Lennon must surely have been turning over in his grave as speakers blared out the Beatles' song "Revolution" for a gathering of conservatives Saturday at the state Capitol.

The Pioneer Press estimated the crowd to be several thousand. At least they didn't quote a non-participating socialist to tell how we were completely wrong, and that higher taxes mean better schools, roads and health care.

Hey, I'm in your picture from last year. Bottom of the pict, walking toward the camera, baseball cap and black Ron Paul shirt. I was handing out literature I had made up myself. Did I give you one? Were you on board as a Paulian back then?

What a coincedence! No, I hadn't joined the Ron Paul bandwagon at that time, and I don't remember getting your literature. I have been sending Ron a few bucks for his congressional campaigns for many years.

Too bad the weather was so poor, might have had a couple thousand more people there.

The media was conspicuously absent. Channel 5 is owned by Stan Hubbard, who is sympathetic to our cause. The rest of the left wingers didn't show up. I would like to get some pictures of a welfare rights protests, and see how many TV stations show up. I've seen pictures on the Star Tribune front page of only a couple dozen leftist protestors. Our protests go on page B4.
