Ron Paul Leads GOP Straw Poll
Friday, May 25, 2007 - FreeMarketNews.com

Presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-Tex) leads a GOP straw poll presented by GOP Bloggers, a grassroots community "with the goal of keeping a Republican majority in Congress, and a Republican President in the White House."

According to email commentary left on several sites, the online GOP straw poll “is very important and is one of the polls that the [mainstream] media uses to analyze a candidate’s popularity."

The GOP Bloggers site and straw poll can be seen here:

Ron Paul has been called an "Internet phenomenon." His campaign has claimed that his name is now one of the top web searches, along with Paris Hilton. Recent press conferences and media appearances, including such programs as Bill Maher's "Real Time" on HBO (Friday evening, May 25) are exposing his small government, free-market views to a widening audience.

The polling, as of late Friday, May 25, reads as follows:

10031 ballots cast

First Choice:

Paul 3240 (32.3%)
F. Thompson 2881 (28.7%)
Romney 1384 (13.8%)
Giuliani 688 (6.9%)
Gingrich 454 (4.5%)
Hunter 369 (3.7%)
Huckabee 261 (2.6%)
(none) 250 (2.5%)
Tancredo 225 (2.2%)
Brownback 163 (1.6%)
McCain 85 (0.8%)
T. Thompson 20 (0.2%)
Gilmore 11 (0.1%)

Fred Thompson is a joke.

If you look at the results based on a specific certainty of vote, its kinda interesting. Ron Paul wins among those who chose 5 for their certainty. Fred Thompson wins for 4, 3, and 2. And then Ron Paul wins for a certainty of 1 as well. A little strange. I wasn't expecting that. I wonder what group is best defined as those who answered there. People who just heard about Ron Paul, but don't want to commit to anything yet? People who are just trying to be reasonable this early in the election cycle? I dunno. Any ideas?

Another interesting thing about the results is that over 82% of the Ron Paul supporters rated their commitment level at "5" (the highest rating) while less than 50% of the voters for any of the "first tier" candidates rated their commitment level at 5. Clearly we are passionate about our man.

I also found that among those who rated their conservatism level at "10" that Paul was the clear winner. The same is true for those who rated themselves "7" or below and Paul's support gets stronger as you get closer to "1" (RINO). The voters who considered themselves an "8" or a "9" on the conservatism scale favored Fred Thompson over Paul.

I'm not a political analyst and don't really know what this means but I thought it was interesting to sift through the numbers.

Fair enough poll - Fred Thompson gained 1000 votes in the last 24 hours as well

This is a *very* important poll! When does it end? I really don't want this to be another Fred Thompson moment!

I dunno.
We libertarians have a habit of jumping on polls and sending them to other libertarians like it was going out of style.

Huckabee and Tancredo deserve a bit more credit - they certainly are no Ron Paul's but, they have some good views and are much better candidates than any of the Frudy McRhompson quartet.
