I found this off the Global Incident Map that someone posted last week:

In an ABSOLUT World according to Mexico
Posted Friday, April 04, 2008, 5:26:34 PM

The In An Absolut World advertising campaign invites consumers to visualize a world that appeals to them -- one they feel may be more idealized or one that may be a bit "fantastic." As such, the campaign will elicit varying opinions and points of view. We have a variety of executions running in countries worldwide, and each is germane to that country and that population.

This particular ad, which ran in Mexico, was based upon historical perspectives and was created with a Mexican sensibility. In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.

As a global company, we recognize that people in different parts of the world may lend different perspectives or interpret our ads in a different way than was intended in that market. Obviously, this ad was run in Mexico, and not the US -- that ad might have been very different.

Anyone have any thoughts? I'm not a fan of this advertisement.

this doesn't belong in this forum section. GRASSROOTS CENTRAL.

The company wrote another apology (one that actually apologized) a couple of days ago. BUt then another forum dug up a old news article that had the company saying this ad was designed to appeal to the segment of the Mexican population that wants the land back.

If illegal immigration is on your list of important issues, then might I suggest alipac.us. THey keep up with that news. I think it now costs $25 per year to post in their forums, but I've donated more than that to them anyway.

There used to be so many pro-war people there I could barely tolerate reading the forums, but that tide has turned somewhat.

See ya there!

I thought it was cute. All its doing is appealing to nationalist sentiment in Mexico. I don't think it's a big deal.

I don't drink Absolut in any event, so I guess my opinion doesn't matter. What matters is how people vote with their wallet. If it offends you, don't buy it, and write them telling them why.
