Idaho House approves 'Real ID' rejection after Senate amendments
Associated Press - April 2, 2008 8:54 AM ET
BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Idaho has joined Montana, Maine, New Hampshire and South Carolina, in rejecting federal REAL ID driver's licenses.
A bill to that effect has passed the Idaho Legislature, and now awaits the signature of Governor Butch Otter.
Pushed after the Sept. 11 attacks, REAL ID was meant to help stop terrorists and illegal immigrants.
But states rejecting it say it will cost millions to make the switch, and puts residents' personal information at risk of theft. Montana officials say the state's drivers' licenses are already more secure than those of most states.
