Ron Paul, Gone But Not Forgotten, Could Teach The Media a Lesson
Jon Friedman

NEW YORK -- Ron Paul may be gone, but he should not be forgotten.

At this advanced stage of the presidential race, it probably seems bizarre that anyone would be writing about a guy who had as much of a chance to be president as Harold Stassen, who made nine unsuccessful bids for the Republican nomination between 1948 and 1992.

Throughout the campaign, the media have treated Paul as a footnote. Snickering pundits all but dismissed him as a cranky kook, in the tradition of another Lone Star State insurgent, Ross Perot. Even when the mainstream publications covered him, you could imagine the assignment editors rolling their eyes in amusement, like parents patronizing a child.

Yet anyone who looked hard enough knew that there was more to Paul than an inability to amass delegates. Most of the media, turned off by his shrill libertarian leanings, missed the real news value of Paul's story -- namely, the Texas congressman's ability to connect intensely with voters.

Successful fundraising

Paul certainly inspired them to open their wallets. On Dec. 16 alone, Paul raised $6 million, which has been described as the biggest one-day take ever. (It also yielded the coolest phrase to emerge from this campaign: "money bomb," which refers to a grassroots fundraising effort over a brief fixed time period.)

According to the Washington Post, the dough came "from more than 50,000 donors, half of whom were new donors."

The day after this burst of political funding, the Washington Post's Web site noted that Paul's "rock star status on the Internet had single-handedly fueled his campaign." In fact, no other candidate except Sen. Barack Obama used the Internet as effectively to his advantage.

The Post pointed out that Paul's campaign also raked in $4.3 million on Nov. 5, which is Guy Fawkes Day, marking "a symbol of rebellion in British history." The report also mentioned that Dec. 16 was the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.

The ardor of Paul's peeps hasn't dimmed. As recently as March 26, Elizabeth MacDonald, the stocks editor at Fox Business Network, wrote about Paul in her blog and received 411 reader comments. (Hey, I'd settle for one-fifth as many responses for this column, Media Web readers, so get to work!)

"Thank you for finally getting a good word in about Ron Paul" and "Thank God someone's showing some sense and finally listening to the man!" were typical of the responses that MacDonald received. (Fox, like MarketWatch, is a unit of News Corp. (NWS: 20.17, +0.17, +0.85%) .)

Focus on other candidates

Instead of writing much about Paul, the national media devoted a great deal of time and space to Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson and never-was candidate Michael Bloomberg, all of whom sizzled at various times in the race, but whose newsworthiness ultimately faded compared to Obama, Clinton and McCain.

Predictably, the media also focused almost entirely on "scoops" about the marquee candidates, even if their bulletins sometimes consisted of what the likely winners had for breakfast.

I'm not suggesting that Paul should've been covered as a candidate who might have threatened McCain in the Republican delegate count.

But the hard-core loyalty of his backers remains one of the most newsworthy, if unwritten, stories of this presidential campaign.

MEDIA WEB QUESTION OF THE DAY: How would you rate the media's coverage of Ron Paul's 2008 campaign: a) spot-on b) patronizing c) disappointing d) atrocious?

Go rate, recommend, and email this to friends. There is not a typical comment section on FoxBusiness. MarketWatch does have a comment section, but you have to log in.

Also DIGG it.

Not on tv, only on the web, and this quote in the middle. Ever get the feeling you're being pandered to? Fux.

id be interested to see exerpts from anyones emails to him

and what if everyone only emailed him to tell him to F off? or tell him we have boycotted fox news and as respectable as his article might be (which its not really, if you read between the lines its a typical fox article) we will not promote it among our groups

and this statement is utterly rediculous

I'm not suggesting that Paul should've been covered as a candidate who might have threatened McCain in the Republican delegate count.

WHAT? threatened McCain? hes implying that ron paul isn't a republican here because by this logic, NO CANDIDATE other than McCain should have been covered.... did Mitts coverage threaten the mccain delegate count? or giuliani? hell no, only and good candidate from another party would be categorized this way...

we should email him and tell him is article is completely rediculous based on this one sentence

This was my reply:

My response to your MEDIA WEB QUESTION OF THE DAY: How would you rate the media's coverage of Ron Paul's 2008 campaign: a) spot-on b) patronizing c) disappointing d) atrocious?

I would definitely have to go with D) Atrocious.
The thing that really bothered me with the media was there wasn't even the illusion of impartiality. Before Super Tuesday, when the MSM still talked to or about Dr. Paul they would always preface it with "Fringe Candidate" or "Long-shot Candidate" Ron Paul. This is when he had more delegates, total votes & donation money than Giuliani AND Thompson! I never heard a reporter introduce Giuliani as "the Adulterer: Mayor Giuliani" or Romney as "The Flip-Flopper: Mitt Romney".

The way that the media consciously & subconsciously manipulated viewers that Congressman Paul was not a valid candidate was criminal. Even though Congressman Paul is still running he is almost never shown on tv anymore. And when he is on the MSM still makes mistakes. I listened to a recent interview of Congressman Paul & the host called him "Former Presidential Candidate Ron Paul". I've seen more news stories of Chelsea Clinton in one week than I have of Congressman Paul in 4 months.

I don't know why I'm even writing a response to you. I have no hope at all that the MSM could ever get to that impossible ideal of accurately reporting the news about a candidate while being impartial to all of them.

yes, we are being pandered to. yes, our candidate was patronized and we were dismissed as crazy cultists. But we also have to take every opportunity we can to prove the legitimacy of this Movement in a respectful way.

Emailing the guy telling him to "F*uck off" really only gives us the momentary personal satisfaction of getting back at the system who marginalized us, but it does NOTHING to help the cause.

I think we need to resist such actions and continue to respectfully inform.

Just think about what has happened in our country in the last 4 months! Our economy is falling apart, our civil liberties are being taken away one by one, and bills are being proposed to give the FED even more authority when it shouldn't exist in the first place. Ron Paul is looking more like a prophet as everything he has been predicting would happen for the last 30 years IS in fact happening.

His story is giving us a nod only in the respect that our "dedication" to the man is newsworthy. However, I think we need to inform him that it isn't Ron Paul we are dedicated to. It is Freedom and Liberty. It may have been some other candidate in Ron Paul's place and we might still be here discussing the same issues.

What bothers me the most isn't that I expect the media or the entire country to instantly agree with the message of Freedom..... it is that these issues wont even be debated. They aren't even open enough to look at them with an open mind and the possibility that we may just be heading down a path to socialism. Maybe it is because the Media itself actually are aware that they have played a roll in this entire travesty. Maybe it is just too hard to admit that they now look like a fool when Ron Paul turns out to be right.

They might only be opening the door enough to entice us to walk through before slamming it in our face yet again while snickering with their other Media talking-head buddies. OR, maybe we keep pushing the Message forward until one day that door is left open long enough for us to actually walk through it.

The one trap we never want to fall into is the trap of destroying our own credibility. We are bigger than that. Our message transcends that type of petty behavior (though I must admit it feels good to go off on these guys sometimes :D)

Notice the MarketWatch link. That is where it came from and FoxBusiness has the same story too. So two bangs for the buck. I do not think it is that great of a story, but any mention of the success of Dr. Paul and the realization of who the media treated him is good for us.

Oh, those poor dears. Well, its up to us to save them. We'll just have to enlighten enough of their viewers about McCain's FEC violations that the media masters can't ignore it any more. Then they can run a great story at last!

Looks to me like they're looking for some cheap web hits.

I am surprised that the Fox blogger only got 411 comments. That doesn't seem like very many.

I'm not giving them a web hit though. They're going to need to endorse him before I go there again. :)

ok ok your exactly right...

very true, if more people understood that, they wouldn't think we were loony

Paul certainly inspired them to open their wallets.

They still think he is a kook but they want to know how to siphon wallets better ("the real story").

The author remains clueless about delegates.

They really have screwed themselves - the majority of Americans don't believe or trust them anymore... so between the war and this election, they have effectively committed suicide!

poor, poor MSM!
