On the day before the 911 attacks, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld made the following statement: "According to some estimates, we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions."

Apparently this is just routine. It's considered perfectly normal that the Pentagon can't account for 25% of what it spends. Certainly, there has been virtually no media coverage of this important story.

But then again, who in Washington cares about a mere $8,000 dollars being taken out of the pocket of every man, woman and child in America?
One Pentagon auditor, Jim Minnery of the Defense Finance and Accounting Service was reassigned when he tried to track a mere $300 million of our missing money. Defense Analyst Franklin C. Spinney puts it simply: "The books are cooked routinely, year after year."
