Headed for Olympics? Beware of Big Brother

Olympic Attendees Will Be Bugged and Searched, U.S. State Department Says

By KIRIT RADIA
March 20, 2008

That's one of the warnings in a new fact sheet on the 2008 Olympics issued today by the U.S. State Department to Americans who intend to go to the games that are being hosted by the Chinese government.

"All visitors should be aware that they have no reasonable expectation of privacy in public or private locations," the fact sheet says. "All hotel rooms and offices are considered to be subject to on-site or remote technical monitoring at all times. Hotel rooms, residences and offices may be accessed at any time without the occupant's consent or knowledge."

O' the joys of cognitive dissonance.

Does anybody in government even consider, not unlike Winston Smith, the utter hypocrisy of that statement coming from our State Department?

Would they deign to post those same warnings to citizens in Amerika?

Is it not our "official" policy, under various SCROTUS decisions and PATRIOT Acts, to do the exact same thing?

Firstly, why aren't we boycotting these Olympics? That's absurd. Can't our government send a message to anyone but their own people (the people they overtax and overrun)?

Secondly, it is hilarious that they're warning Americans that are going to the Olmypics about this, but the government can do the same thing to Americans over here.

I agree about the boycot - supporting anything China does is hypocrisy to the extreme.
But I venture to guess China-USA relations are hunky-dory.

Hopefully we are not as much of an advanced police state as China, otherwise we wouldn't be able to write such things. But you guys make good points.
