I was there, and I finally got to vote for somebody rather than just voting against somebody!

We had a great turn out from all over the state. The town was painted Ron Paul last night. It was great. As a Tuscaloosa native I am proud to say that the revolution kicked into high gear today in my home town.

There were a couple of staffers there for Mitt, and whatever other scattered supporters there were for other candidates seemed to be sitting on their hands all morning. The Ron Paul supporters were all very friendly. We had a great time watching the YouTube videos for the other candidates. Huckabee and Thompson each had a real volunteer get up and speak for them. A local preacher brought down the roof when he got up to speak for Ron Paul. The local TV stations were there. Hopefully their video will get picked up nationally.

PS
Everyone had to pay $35 to vote, and you had to present a valid Alabama ID. There were a total of 266 votes cast as follows:
0 - Tancredo
2 - McCain
2 - Brownback
6 - Huckabee
7 - Guilani
9 - Thompson
10 - Hunter
14 - Romney
216 - Paul

I forgot to mention that Duncan Hunter called in and spoke to the crowd via speaker phone.

The two volunteers that spoke for Huckabee and Thompson were local politicians.

Most of the candidates were represented by YouTube videos. Romney had a very slick and expensive looking DVD that was played by his paid staffer. The volunteer that spoke for Thompson talked a lot about the fact that Tompson was born in Alabama.

It seemed like everyone in the room was wearing a Ron Paul pin. It was very exciting. It was held at the Bryant Conference Center which is right across the street from Bryant Denny Staduium, and the atmosphere was a lot like a winning football game. Everyone was in a great mood because as soon as it started getting crowded you could look around the room at the pins, signs, t-shirts, etc and tell we were going to win by a landslide.

TUSCALOOSA | Supporters of Congressman Ron Paul dominated the West Alabama Republican Assembly 2007 Presidential Preference Straw Poll held at the Bryant Conferent Center this afternoon.

Of the 266 votes casts during the poll, Paul claimed 216 of them, landing him an easy win.

At a distant second was Gov. Mitt Romney with 14 votes.

There was quite a diverse crowd. It looked like a Ron Paul
rally, however. Ron Paul stuff was everywhere and only
a few Mitt signs. What impressed me is was the number of
very "mainline" Republicans there. I do not get the feeling
that Ron Paul is going to be treated in Alabama like he has
been treated by the state Republican Party in other states.
Based on what I saw today in Tuscaloosa, I would not be
surprised to see Ron Paul get all the Alabama votes for the
nomination. This bordered on a religious experience. Nothing
I can say here will give an accurate impression of what I
saw today. You just had to have been there. Everytime
the name "Ron Paul" was mentioned from the podium, the
entire room erupted with whoops and hollering and sign
waving. It was truly exciting.

A fellow gave a speech in support of Fred Thompson,
who was born in Alabama BTW. There were no
spontaneous demonstrations and when he finished
the audience gave him a nice round of polite applause.
I was glad to see the Ron Paul crowd acting like ladies
and gentlemen. That is very important around here.

American- this nascar like point system is something, we the members of this board started on this thread: http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=12649
. We use it to keep track of the candidates performances in each states straw polls.
Each candidate is rewarded points for place finished....
the number would make more sense if they were lined up in columns under each state.

You can't buy an endorsement like this:

“Ron Paul believes in freedom and the Constitution, and as a historian it is my sincere opinion that he is the greatest congressman in American history,” said Thomas Woods, an Auburn native whose book, “The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History,” was on the New York Times bestsellers list when it was published in 2004.

Another article and they do their best to not mention Ron Paul.
http://www.nbc13.com/gulfcoastwest/vtm/news.apx.-content-articles-VTM-2007-08-18-0008.html

They mention Ron Paul:
"Out of 266 ballots cast, it was Texas Congressman Ron Paul by an overwhelming majority, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in a distant second."

But then no mention of him at all....

I wonder why they fail to mention which candidate this supporter is talking about:
"The straw poll hopes to also draw in people like Tracy Kozinski.
This is the first time I've participated in anything ever, politically. I vote as I'm supposed to. This is the first time a candidate has moved me to become so incredibly involved,” said Kozinski."

We kicked some arse.

There was one lone Ron Paul sign sitting at the foot of the door to the entrance of the huge voting room. At one point my girlfriend and I noticed that somehow a Mitt Romney sign had been taped over the Ron Paul sign.

Correcting this injustice we unmounted the Ron Paul sign and allowed both Romney and Dr. Paul's signs to be visible.

My group was seated in front of the only Mitt supporters I spotted the whole time. After I was done eating I offered to and took their food trays to the garbage.

We kicked some arse.

Not to be a downer, but random polling of 600 republican voters was 1%. It's great for name recognition whenever we win a straw poll, but the low polling numbers suggest that the nomination will still be a monumental sacrifice for all of us, if Ron is going win it. I guess I am saying, I would not let victories like this make us drunk with success lest we forget what we are up against. To win this, we need to be everywhere and donate our time, talent and resources until it hurts.

The main stream media believes the US electorate is apathetic. Americans will usually
vote, but to get them out on the street to support a candidate has become unheard of.

This has changed with the entry of Ron Paul into the Presidential Race. People like
Alabamian Tracy Kozinski said this to NBC13,"This is the first time I've participated in
anything ever, politically. I vote as I'm supposed to. This is the first time a candidate
has moved me to become so incredibly involved."

Americans are not apathetic toward politics. It is the same old messages politicians spew
that we reject. Ron Paul has changed that and I hope our leaders sit up and take note.

From the Ron Paul press release. "Dr. Paul received 208 votes (73%) for a landslide
victory against Mitt Romney today at the Strafford County, New Hampshire straw poll.
Romney received 26 votes," and "Ron Paul received 216 votes for a commanding first-place
finish in a straw poll today sponsored by the West Alabama Republican Assembly. Mitt
Romney came in second with 14 votes."

This is an historical election and it is up to us to take advantage of this unprecedented
opportunity.

I also hope that in upcoming elections, that Americans who feel as Doctor Paul does, will
run for Federal, State and Local Offices.
