Garcia was good. Zappa was good. Clapton still is. I love--absolutely admire Jorma Kaukonnen--even if I can't spell his name. Beck and Howe are good too. But then, I saw Stevie Ray and Jimmie at Farm Aid II playing the Star Spangled Banner. One had his guitar under his leg and the other behind his back.

I can't choose. I don't want to choose. Don't make me choose!!

Limited horizons, indeed.

Check out any classically-trained guitarist. There's more to playing an instrument than treating it like an axe.

Clapton unplugged is about as good as it gets in pop culture. He's absolutely amazing.

Sorry, but if it's not acoustic, it's make-believe, so I gotta rule out all the axe-murderers.

Oh, and why is is supposed to be better music if it's not held in the conventional manner? Those are stunts and have nothing to do with producing the best MUSIC.

Robert Johnson

Jimmie Page

Eddie VanHalen

Tom Morello

Dimebag Darrell from Pantera...

There are too many to list, and can't be ranked because of time and style differences making them not comperable to each other.

I like Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett, and about everyone else you can think of.

John McLaughlin and Grant Green are two very good jazz guitarists. Also, Pat Metheny.

I don't know much about Classical guitar (I do listen to Classical, but not guitar specifically).

Hendrix I think fits in nearly with Jazz guitarists because of his superior complexity. I don't care for Clapton, or really any other white "blues"/rock guitarists.

Obviously, if we want blues, you have to go back to mid/early 20th century--my favorites being Son House, Robert Johnson, and Jimmy Rogers.

Knopfler indeed--and his brother, too!
John Williams
Chet Atkins
Andre Segovia
Santana. And a host of others who unfortunately never got recorded for posterity.

You really want us to choose? Ouch! Can't be done.

Lots of great folks
I love Hendricks, Garcia, Nugent, Zappa etc.
Hard to pick #1 best out of many styles.
One name I haven't seen here is,
Roy Clark.
That guy had fun with a guitar.

I think Jeff Healey is really underated. He was blind from cancer from the age of one. Too bad he just past away this month from cancer at age of 41.

Cheers to Roy Clark. The guy was much better than most realize. If it had strings, he could play it.

He lived in Tulsa. You expect me to bad mouth him? Sid Barrett was pretty good while he was still sorta sane.

I can't believe Dimebag was killed right here in Columbus. I decided not to go to the Al Rosa for that concert and I'm so glad I made that choice. He was awesome.

I always paid attention to lead singers and not guitarists, but I love the guitar and after knowing that Jimi Hendrix played the guitar backwards/upside down, and still made the music he did, I have to give him mad props. I can hardly play the guitar the right way!

Jimi's playing a right handed strat upside down, in the left hand poition, was really no big feat.
He just restrung the guitar in the normal EADGBE pattern, and played lefty.
That's not to say that what he did wasn't amazing. He took every advantage of having the
volume/tone controls and whammy bar at the top side of the guitar.

Yep. Say what you want about Hendrix's playing, but he was a true innovator.

You know how everyone MUST check out Ron Paul. Well everyone must check out this guy I'm gonna mention. For musicians who get the epiphany of my guitarist, it is like citizens who have the epiphany of Ron Paul.

I'm gonna have to school the lot of youse, because you've left out the greatest living guitarist, who is one of the greatest composers ever, who has formed one of the most greatest and most organic bands ever, who has made an album as great or better than Beethoven's 5th Symphony and he is a JAZZ GUITARIST

So who is this chap? hey? By the way, I wish I had more time to listen to the above mentioned guitarists, but this guy takes the cake for me::::::::::::
