NEW YORK, March 6 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow now has 74 billionaires with average wealth of $5.9 bln, placing it above New York, Forbes Magazine said in its annual rich list published on Thursday.
According to the list, New York has 71 billionaires, followed by London with 36, Istanbul with 34, and Hong Kong with 30.
Russia is second only to the United States in the number of its super-rich. An additional 35 Russians have crossed the $1 bln mark in the past year, helped along by the continued rise of the ruble against the dollar.

"Sixteen years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia, with 87 billionaires, is the new No. 2 country behind the U.S., easily overtaking Germany, with 59 billionaires, which held the honour for six years," said Forbes associate editor Luisa Kroll.

The Unites States accounts for 469 (42%) of the world's billionaires.
Topping the list of Russia's billionaires is Oleg Deripaska with $28 bln, placing him ninth in the world, ahead of the more famous Roman Abramovich with $23.5 bln, in 15th place.

Deripaska's holding company Basic Element owns huge assets in insurance, auto manufacture, and aluminum, while Abramovich, since selling his oil company Sibneft to Russian state-controlled gas giant Gazprom in 2005, has bought up steel and mining assets. He also owns Chelsea Football Club.

Russia's richest woman remains Elena Baturina, the 45-year-old second wife of Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, 71. Forbes estimates that she has added $1.1 bln to her personal wealth in the past year, bringing it up to $4.2 bln and putting her in 253rd place globally.

Baturina founded Inteko in 1991, which became Moscow's largest construction firm in the years after her husband became mayor. In late 2006 she sued the Russian edition of Forbes over a cover story.

She's the boss - Russian businesswomen lead the world

March 8, 2008

New data shows that when it comes to female-owned small businesses, Russia leads the way. The country has more of them than anywhere else on the planet.

Nadezhda Kopytina has been her own boss for the past 20 years. Through a combination of hard work and skill, she's grown her frozen seafood company, Lyodovo, into one of the leaders in its field.

Being a female business-owner is an advantage, not a challenge, she says.

“As a woman, I consider partnership and loyalty to be some of the main characteristics of a successful company. But, frankly, I don’t ever justify my mistakes by saying I am a woman. I believe that in business, people should not be defined as men or women. They should be judged by their professional merits,” Kopytina says.
According to PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the number of female company bosses in Russia more than doubled in the past year.

“As many as 89% of small businesses in Russia are owned by women. That makes us number one in the world,” said business consultant Elena Shulgina.

‘Eva’ is one of Russia’s leading retail chains of plus size clothing. Elena Safonina started the company 15 years ago out of her own frustration with the lack of high-quality fashion for bigger women.
She says the country’s unique geographical location and some quintessentially Russian character traits define the country’s female entrepreneurs.
“Russian women are not quite European and at the same time not exactly Asian. Since our country is somewhere in between these parts of the world, our women manage to combine rationality with being highly expressive and creative,” Safonina says.

Some say female-owned businesses in Russia are less likely to become the leaders in their sectors as women focus on creating a family-like atmosphere rather than stifling their male competitors.

Kopytina disagrees with this opinion.

Bon Appetit!
Lyodovo, one of Russia's largest ready-to-eat seafood and frozen vegetable producers, has announced an ambitious rebranding effort to promote its brand on both the domestic and international market.
Founded as a seafood trading company in 1994 by then 24-year-old Nadezhda Kopytina, Lyodovo is now a group of five companies. Having processed 5,500 tons in 2006, the company posted revenues of 508 million rubles ($20.32 million) - and earned 41 million rubles ($1.64 million) in profits. In the first quarter of 2007, revenues have grown by 7 percent to 135 million rubles ($5.4 million).
The decision to rebrand the company came gradually. At first, management simply wanted to change the packaging. "We didn't want to use metal containers, because that looks like canned food," Kopytina explains, "but we don't make canned food. Our food is fresh." She found the solution to this in Germany, where ready-to-eat cold food has been sold in transparent, Tupperware style boxes for years.
But the new containers required the construction of new processing lines, imported from Germany. Lyodovo has invested more than $2 million in the new facilities, which can process up to 10 million units annually.

The top 10% of the world's population owns or controls more of the world's wealth than the bottom 90% combined. The top 2% control more of the wealth than the top percentages 3 - 10 combined.
