An e-mail just went out to my Meetup Group that Ron Paul and Bob Barr are meeting tonight to discuss the posibility of a 3rd party run.

Has anyone heard anything on this?

I don't know anything about any purported meeting, much less their agenda for dinner discussion, but they are friends.

Now that the congressional race is over, Paul may actually consider a 3rd party run. But I think it is higly unlikely. This movement will have a much greater impact within the republican party then by going indy. Paul knows this.

Why would you hope so? Barr is a hypocrite. He voted for the patriot act and against the right to same sex marriage. Why would you do that if you are FOR civil liberties?

Give me barry goldwater jr. or something

That was Barr before he came to his senses, quit the republican party, and joined the Libertarian party.

Him leaving the party makes me think he hasn't come to his senses. Instead of changing things in the house, which he could have done, he decided to leave the party and join a different party that only holds meetings on sunny days because rain will get in their treehouse.

The neo-cons control Barr's old house.

I don't think there is any reason to assume that the intent of such a meeting would necessarily be a Barr/Paul ticket. But there are many strategies that they could discuss (like the LRC posts says) such as grassroots organization and liberty education organization. I do think it is likely Barr is thinking about a Libertarian party run or an indy run but less likely that Ron would be on the ticket as a VP (he can always serve as a cabinet member) because it would complicate his status in the Republican party.

I think this is all very exciting news and I know many of us may not be very impressed with Barr's record as a high level Republican during his career. But he has since turned over many new leaves and is a leadership member of the LP now and has reversed his positions on the drug war, patriot act, etc. If he were to run indy or 3rd party he would have a much better chance than Paul would. Barr is well known and well liked by Republicans and he would easily steal lots of votes from McCain.

If they can find a strategy to build an even larger coalition that we already have in the rEVOLution I think think this has really big potential and we should be very enthused about the possibilities. Just don't get carried away with the Barr/Paul rumors.

I was hoping one of Ron Paul's sons would run as a indy/3rd party. That way Ron Paul keeps his TxCD14 seat and we get to keep our "Paul08" signs. ;)
