View Full Version : What about the Governator?

Schwarzenegger used to be a small government guy, a self-proclaimed disciple of Milton Friedman.

I remember him making an appearance in Friedman's Free to Choose TV series in the 80's, really endorsing the guy. January 29th 2007 was declared Milton Friedman Day by Schwarzenegger to honor his influence on modern economics and governmental policy. I think it's safe to assume he's simpathetic to free market, sound money, all that stuff.

In March 2004, the Cato Institute (libertarian policy research foundation), rated him 1st in their 2004 fiscal policy report card of the tax and spending policies of the nation's governors.

I believe that, after becoming Governator, he slowly turned into a big government Neocon, mostly in order to fit in with the establishment.

In many regards though, he's a Republican that seems very aligned with Ron Paul's views on economy and taxation.

Is there anyway we can ask him about his views on Congressman Ron Paul? Can you imagine how great it would be (popularity-wise) to have the full endorsement of the Governator?

"Those who don't vote for Ron Paul are girlie-men. I will hunt you down!"

Ron Paul wants to "terminate terrorism" too, but that doesn't make him a neo-con. He wants to do it by actually capturing terrorists rather than invading nation's and forcing democracy(which really just creates more terrorists). We can bring many away from the dark side, including the terminator.

ok jesus christ you guys are really good at disagreeing with people that support you.

Arnold is a neo-con because he supports nation building.

Get it now?

Sorry if you misunderstood me librtywire. I was saying it is possible to convert neo-cons to our philosophy. Many board members here are previous supporters of the war. Ron Paul himself has said he has received a lot of praise from people he thought were war-mongers. Apparently: once a neo-con, not always a neo-con.

I think he is certainly recruitable. The thing that he has going for him is that he is not a "politician" but an activist. He got into politics because of his start power, but he did it because Gov. Davis SUCKED ASS. I think Schwarzenegger has done fairly well with CA, and I applaud some of his emissions stuff - I think states should be handling this crap at a local level anyway, the Feds are horrible - but most of all he is an anti-spending guy. That is good. We need more of that.

Paul Broun, the recently elected guy from GA, is not quite kosher with Ron Paul's foreign policy views, either, yet we applaud and support him. I think we need to preach to the "unclean" not the already converted.

I live in Los Angeles.. uhmmm, he gets manhandled by the special interest liberals and democrats...

The republicans are currently fighting a budget battle with the socialists and they are hanging tough - but taking a lot of flack from the media. They want to do away with in-state tuition for illegals, end welfare for illegals and end the the unlimited duration for welfare recipients- use the federal guidlines for welfare duration etc... and the democrats are not budging. The republicans want a BALANCED buget, the democrates want to spend spend spend. Governator is leaning on the republicans instead of telling the democrats to shave the pork.

think about it.. if 'YOU' come her to cali to go to college or anyschool, you get charged an out of state tuition, which is considerable.....BUT they give illegal immigrants price breaks.. so, out of country citizens get a benefit but out of state citizens don't???? Also, there is a federal law giving 5 year cap to welfare, cali wants indefinite...and has it... but republicans want to end that...

these cuts will save american taxpayers hundres of millions and the terminator is saying 'bend'.. hit the taxpayer MORE so they can fund these socialist programs..

to me, its ridiculous........ I voted for him, never again....

If he believes in nation building, that's not too far from where I was myself a few years ago, regrettably.

I've been a libertarian/classic liberal most of my life, starting with Frédéric Bastiat when I was barely a teenager. 9/11 was very upsetting for me, after that I've been defending Bush's response with warfare and nation building, and got myself into many heated arguments about this.

Congressman Ron Paul helped me see the error of my thinking, after listening to his speeches on the Internet, I slapped myself in the forehead, he made total sense.

I deviated from real classic liberal principles. A lack of knowledge of contemporary american history is also to blame (otherwise I would've immediately understood the terrorists' motivations).

There's a huge difference between a brainwashed Neocon and someone who's a libertarian at heart, but somehow compromised his or her principles along the way. Given the right message, they're definitely very "recruitable", like beermotor says.

Governator keeps endorsing billions of dollars in bond measures that are somehow "needed" despite our massive state income tax. He's promoting state-wide socialized medicine ala Mitt Romney and just recently passed a statewide cell phone while driving ban.

Besides many republicans in this state don't really like Governator, however Repubs are such a small number that doesn't really matter. The "centrists" (read: wealthy democrats) love him and a lot of the libs figure it could be worse.

Meanwhile are schools are a joke, the health services are a joke and our infrastructure is a joke. In the 60's almost half the budget went to roads and bridges, now that's down to around 2% despite the fact our taxes keep going up.

Governator will endorse either Gulianni or Romney period. Those are the only two I could see him supporting. Frankly I don't even know if Ron Paul really wants his endorsement considering the microscopic registered Republican base in this state that actually votes don't really like the guy.

sorry to be rude. its hard for me to see outside of my perspective sometimes.
I was supporting Harry Browne(RIP) during Bush Jr's first run, and then Mike Badnarik in 2004, so most of these ideas aren't new to me. I suggest anyone that likes Ron Paul should do some reading of Harry Browne(RIP).

Yeah, upon further reflection, maybe I was just happy he got elected to save me the 1k auto tag bill from Davis, heh.

I agree, he is looking more like a "moderate" a la Giuliani/Bloomberg.
