Ron Paul Roundup (2-26-08)
by: RS Davis (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=194780914&blogID=361646375&Mytoken=EC64730D-432B-4D13-B76C6B3A173487B7121870952)

Hello Freedomphiles! Welcome to today's Ron Paul Roundup! Let's start today with a little more on the District-14 Congressional race that Dr Paul is fighting. Well, reason has a couple of tidbits of interest that came out yesterday afternoon. They first reported about how Ron Paul lost the endorsement (http://galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=3e97f1c7650d079f&-session=TheDailyNews:42F9486D057241FBECLuS3694A5E) of The Galveston County Daily News and lost the endorsement (http://www.victoriaadvocate.com/839/story/197135.html) of The Victoria Advocate. David Weigel comments (http://reason.com/blog/show/125156.html):

But Peden's latest FEC filing reveals that Paul's plea for fundraising has rocketed him past his challenger. Peden raised less than $20,000 since the start of February and has about $100,000 left to spend. Paul's raised nearly $500,000 this month and has nearly $300,000 left to spend.

Peden's disbursement report reveals where the cash is going:

- Nearly $3,900 to Houston-based Ignite Marketing for campaign materials

- About $8,000 for campaign signs

- Nearly $20,000 to DC political consultants at Marsh Copsey and Associates. (Marsh Copsey didn't end up producing anything for the campaign—the relationship ended without ads.)

- $679 to his 17-year old daughter Brittany for "contract labor"

Paul's disbursements are here: Most of his money is going into media and paying his staff, and as a result he's pummelling Peden on the airwaves.

Weigel followed-up (http://reason.com/blog/show/125162.html) less than an hour later:

I just had a chat with Mark Elam, Ron Paul's congressional campaign manager, who's backed up the rumors of good tracking polls in the race against Peden.

"He's improving his standing," Elam said, "which has never been in jeopardy in our polls." From a starting point of around 60 percent last month, Paul is at 72 percent in the last internal poll. Peden is at 11 percent. According to Elam the numbers have been moving since the campaign bought $400,000 in TV and radio ads in the district.

I asked about Peden's internal polls, which show him up 10 over Paul. "Our Democratic opponent said the same thing last year," Elam said. "I think we won by 20 points. These guys are doing so poorly that they have to put out false numbers." According to the Paul campaign's polls, only about 20 percent of TX-14 voters have an opinion of Peden, and most have never heard of him. Elam brushed off the endorsements of the Victoria and Galveston County papers: "They've endorsed against Dr. Paul in the past."

I wish I had that cat's connections. I mean, I can drop some names, too, but he can talk to any mofo he wants, it seems. Here's Paul debating Peden without Peden actually showing up, also provided by Weigel:

But back to the national stage, where International outlet PressTV out of Tehran, Iran, report (http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=44672&secti..3510203) that Ron Paul is back in the saddle again:

There has been confusion in recent weeks since the Texan gave the impression that he was withdrawing from the presidential campaign to refocus his political efforts on a well-funded House primary challenge.

"I will stay in as long as my supporters want me to," the 10-term congressman promised on CNN.

Paul said students around the country believed there existed no novelty in the campaigns of other candidates.

The Texan lawmaker added that in his travels, he had found 'something very significant going on around the country' saying that he 'couldn't stop this movement' even if he tried.

Now that he's back on the trail, he's got some company. As I mentioned yesterday, Ralph Nader is launching himself to new heights of irrellevance with his announcement of a 3rd party bid for president, sending dozens of people nationwide into excited shrieks.

ConnieTalk thinks (http://www.connietalk.com/ralph_nader_ron_paul_022508.html) he should have endorsed Ron Paul:

If the beliefs he lays claim to are his true beliefs--why is he not just endorsing Ron Paul, and opening up his chance to be Paul's VP running mate??

Ron Paul is the only candidate left in the race who has not wavered in his opposition to this war. Yet somehow, Ralph freaking Nader can get a full segment on NBC's Meet The Press, but Ron Paul can't get more than 6 minutes and 31 seconds of talking time in the entire MSNBC Republican debate.

From which, by the way, we had hundreds of people send in this petition, and got not a single reply.

If Nader truly cared about the future of our country, and was concerned with corporate politics, wouldn't he would have at least mentioned the unequal coverage the MSM has given candidates in this election?

He could have been Ron Paul's perfect running mate: both strongly opposed the Iraq War; both advocate consumer rights; both are proponents of following the Constitution to the letter; both are critics of big banks, and the profits of health insurers in America. And honestly, I could see Paul's campaign needing a little strength in the environmental aspect - Nader could have been the perfect ying to his yang.

Right-libertarian Gary Wood writes (http://www.nolanchart.com/article2918.html)(correctly) on The Nolan Chart that there is no fucking way that the bomb-throwing pinko media whore will be attractive to Ron Paul supporters:

There are numerous Paul supporters seeking a third party candidate to embrace and many more desiring Paul to be that candidate. Out of the darkness of realization Ron Paul will not be doing anything during the general election except running a campaign to return to Congress as a Republican it could be expected that a large number may actually begin to embrace Nader for President.

Don't count on it. Ralph Nader has a very interesting platform with several areas that may sound good to the ear from many. In his "12 Issues that Matter for 2008" there are some that are targeted at corporate greed and his venomous distaste for the two major parties is clear. He appears as a champion for the people yet his 40 years has shown he is not a champion of the Constitution. When his campaign attempts to figure out why there is so little attention or connection with the freedom loving revolutionaries that Dr. Paul has touched look no further than a single comment to begin to understand.

"It is time for this country to move to a direct democracy." This is according to Ralph Nader, among other changes his Jefferson style revolution supports he wants a complete end to the federalist republic experiment approaching its 220th Anniversary of Ratification this year. It's good you are in the race Mr. Nader, it is your right and the two major parties need your thorn. However, Ron Paul supporters aren't ignoring you by accident sir, they simply can never embrace you as you are not a defender of the Constitution so precious to most of us.

Roderick T Beaman is already looking ahead (http://www.libertyforall.net/?p=1186)on Liberty for All:

It was our fantasy. Ron Paul would do better than expected in the early primaries, generating for him increasing media attention. Discussions would break out in coffee klatches, soccer games, NASCAR events and locker rooms across the country. CBS, NBC and ABC would start covering him, commensurate with his fundraising and the American people would have a reawakening. No frontrunner would have enough votes to ensure a first ballot nomination and there would be a brokered Republican National Convention in St. Paul. After several ballots, Ron Paul would become the fall back nominee.

Well, it didn't happen. Ron Paul will probably go to St. Paul with fewer than 100 delegates. John McCain is the likely nominee. So what did we gain? I don't think much.

Goldwater inspired a new generation of conservative and led to the eventual election of Ronald Reagan. That was a mixed-bag, but Beaman doesn't believe this will happen again. I haven't lost hope yet, myself. Will we have a generation of Ron Paul Republicans like we had Goldwater Conservatives?

The University of Texas at Dallas paper writes (http://media.www.utdmercury.com/media/storage/paper691/news/2008/02/25/News/Students.Seek.Exposure.For.Ron.Paul-3229913.shtml) about the young supporters there:

Paul's supporters have said that it is not Paul alone they support, but more importantly his message.

"Our government has grown more irresponsible to the citizens it exists to represent. Ron Paul's goal is and always has been to correct these problems by returning our government to the foundational Law of the Land - the Constitution - which the vast majority of our nation's politicians get away with ignoring and violating on a regular basis," graduate student David Bindel said.

Students for Ron Paul is aware of the hurdles facing them, including media representation and a low delegate total for the Republican nomination.

"Ron Paul's message is clear, but some major media outlets would rather we not hear it. They censor Paul by keeping him out of debates and omitting him from performance polls. Fox News went as far as to edit their rebroadcast of the January debate in South Carolina, completely removing Ron Paul's response to one question," Steven Rosson, business administration junior, said.

There's an interesting article (http://www.yaledailynews.com/articles/view/23754) in TheYale Daily News about Kerri Price, Yale alumnus and Ron Paul's new media spokeswoman:

Kerri Price '07 celebrated her 22nd birthday on the same day her political idol, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, announced he was running for office — just a few days into her last spring break at Yale. A couple of months later, after receiving her diploma, she met him, but only for a moment, outside "The Daily Show," where she was waiting to catch a glimpse of Paul as he got out of his car to walk toward the studio.

Less than a year has elapsed since that brief encounter. And now, Price is Paul's campaign spokeswoman.

"It was beyond all of my wildest expectations," Price said in an interview.

Unlike peers who interned for other presidential campaigns — slaving away from the sidelines, answering endless phone calls and fetching coffee for higher-ups — Price landed the senior position on the Paul campaign just months out of college.

After suddenly becoming the campaign spokeswoman last December, Price has found herself working 20-hour days conducting interviews with networks and newspapers from Fox News to the Wall Street Journal. On a typical workday, Price said, she browses through mainstream outlets to gauge the current pulse of public opinion, selects an issue or message she thinks will resonate most with voters and then incorporates it into her daily press releases.

Alhough Price was initially worried about making a mistake in front of the public's watchful eye, she said she soon realized how simple Paul's message really was.

And finally, The Salt Lake Tribune talks (http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_8365461) about Ron Paul's Mormon support:

Paul's supporters turn to a quote by former LDS Prophet Ezra Taft Benson saying that the nation has, in various degrees, abandoned the constitutional principles inspired by the Founding Fathers.

"How often do we hear any of the presidential candidates talk about returning to a constitutional government, as set up by the Founding Fathers?" asks a Facebook.com page set up for Mormons for Ron Paul. "The only one who comes close [and hits the mark perfectly] is Ron Paul."

Thanks! You send me a lot of love on these, and I appreciate it. So, what is it that you love about it, if I may be so bold?

First off, it is handy if I have been too busy to read all of the stories. You take the time to weed through the unnecessary bits, leaving the best and most important parts in tact and in one locale. Besides that, you dig up bones that I have neither the time nor the patience to find. It is laid out very neatly and one story follows another. Keeps things on track and in perspective. I particularly liked the way you pointed out the different "spins" in a recent article. I actually use the round-up quite a bit to keep people informed and would like to use them in printed form as we near our primary.

The round-up secures my feeling that we are winning. When the few scraps we have come together, one can truly see that we are making a difference. It's hearts and minds that we are winning, not voters. With the round-up I can say, "Look here! This is what we did in one day! All by ourselves!

IT WAS SHAKE AND BAKE AND I HELPED!!
